In a matter of a decade cheerleading developed from a school and college pastime, meant primarily for pep rally purposes at football, baseball and other sports events, into a major sporting code.

Prior to 2000, cheerleading was rather low key, and teams operated like fan clubs or social clubs. No one could have foreseen that cheerleading would become a major national sport with international teams participating in massive competitions, specialists helping to coach the teams, mix the music and choreograph the moves, and special cheer gear including uniforms and purpose-built cheer shoes available for purchase.

Cheerleading is not only a rivalry, but it is also a dancing and dance routines.
