Oshiomhole: The Role Governors Play In Election Violence

Adams Oshiomhole, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), political leaders are partly to blame for the violence seen on election days.
On Tuesday, the former governor of Edo State spoke at the citizens elections dialogue, which was organized by YIAGA Africa, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Channels TV.
According to Oshiomhole, disruptors employ difficult to get weapons.
“When I was a governor, and I mean this, you can ask [former] President Goodluck Jonathan, I did mention at a meeting at the palace that sometimes governors contribute to election violence because buying an AK-47 is more expensive than purchasing an akara,” he stated.

“And when you see a lot of young, unemployed males with AK-47s, who is providing them? Therefore, we must assume the responsibility for the political leadership.
How many cops do you want to send out in the event that 500 voters decide to use violence? Accept that all political parties believe that during the campaign, we must constantly stress that this election is about the right to vote and that the process, not the result, is more important.
Let’s inform our leaders that they need to advocate for violent free elections. I am adamant that we all have a responsibility. More than the sum of all the political parties, Nigeria is a much larger entity.
