Amotekun Arrests Over 300 Suspected Criminals in Ondo State

Amotekun

By DAYO ADESULU

The Ondo State security outfit, Amotekun, has arrested and paraded more than 300 suspected criminals over the past three months. According to its commander, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the arrests were made across 15 locations within the state’s 18 council areas.

Details of Arrests

Speaking in Akure, Adeleye attributed the development to the increased influx of bandits into the South-West region, prompting heightened vigilance to safeguard lives and property.

He noted that the majority of the suspects arrested in border communities were linked to crimes such as:

  • Kidnapping
  • Armed robbery
  • Housebreaking
  • Other minor offences

Role of Grassroots Intelligence

Adeleye emphasized that Amotekun relies heavily on grassroots intelligence for its operations:

  • Over 300 suspects were apprehended based on intelligence gathered from villages and towns.
  • The outfit employs Amotekun ambassadors who discreetly gather information within communities to identify criminal collaborators.
  • This grassroots approach has been critical to the unit’s success.

Ongoing Actions and Strategies

  • Some suspects have already been prosecuted and remain in correctional facilities.
  • Amotekun is working to make Ondo State “too hot” for criminals by implementing strategies to deter their activities.
  • Commander Adeleye assured residents that there is no cause for alarm, as the unit is on high alert to ensure safety.

Support from Governor Aiyedatiwa

The commander praised Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for providing the necessary resources and support to enable Amotekun’s effective operation.
