ASUU Accused Of Corruption By Buhari

ASUU ACCUSED OF CORRUPTION BY BUHARI
ASUU has been accused of engaging in corrupt behavior by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Since February 14, the union has been on strike in protest of demands pertaining to the allowances and wages of lecturers.
The president has begged with the union on multiple occasions to end the strike, but the lecturers have refused.
ASUU is no less complicit in the corruption in tertiary education, according to President Buhari, who made the statement while formally opening the Fourth National Summit on Diminishing Corruption, which was organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Office of Secretary to Government of the Federation (OSGF), and Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
While opponents belittle financing by focusing only on budgetary allocations, he claimed that corruption in the education system continues to harm investments, calling for a more thorough re-evaluation of expenditure.
“This year’s summit will reflect how corruption undercuts educational policy, investments, and creates a hostile learning environment for our young,” the president added.
“Continuous strikes, particularly by unions in tertiary education, frequently imply that government is grossly underfunding education, but I must say that corruption in the education system has been undermining our investment in the sector, and those who go on prolonged strikes for tenuous reasons are no less complicit.
“The 1999 Constitution prioritizes education by including it on the Concurrent List, placing the burden of funding high-quality education on the shoulders of both the Federal and State Governments.
“The overall education budget for each year, which should be considered as other financial commitments in their entirety, is a reflection of both the federal and state budgets.
“The Federal Ministry of Education and academic institutions should not be the only recipients of funding for education in the Federal Budget; funding for Universal Basic Education, transfers to TETFUND, and refunds from the Education Tax Pool Account to TETFUND should also be included.

“Strangely, stakeholders in tertiary education, including unions, have not paid attention to corruption in the expenditure of domestically generated revenue of academic institutions.
“I urge all interested parties to demand transparency in how academic institutions are run, and I urge unions to question their institutions’ bloated payrolls and ongoing expenses. Let me also beg the unions to collaborate with the government to give the names on the payroll faces and identities.
“The government cannot cover the cost of subsidizing education alone due to dwindling resources. I charge our academics with luring endowments, research, and other awards to colleges of education, polytechnics, and universities that are comparable to those found in other nations.
