Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri bemoaned that the devastating flood in the state had destroyed his own building in Sampou Community in Kolokuma/Opokuma local government area.
In several localities, Diri conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the flood situation and lamented the destruction of property and the misery that the flood had caused the state’s residents.
Bayelsa State Governor visited communities affected by the flood, including Tungbo, Sagbama town, and Adagbabiri, all in the Sagbama Local Government Area. He was accompanied by the state commissioner for the environment and chairman of the Task Force on Flood Mitigation and Management, Mr. Eselema Gbaranbiri, his counterparts in the departments of works and information, Moses Teibowei and Ayibaina Duba, respectively.
The governor stated that he wanted to hear directly from the people about their struggles and those of their communities.
He understood that it was a difficult time for everyone, but he urged them not to give up.
Additionally, he gave monetary presents to the affected villages and reassured them that the task force on flooding will quickly deliver them with relief supplies.
In addition, he urged Bayelsans to protect one another and assist victims as their homes and villages were being ransacked.
“I felt that now was not the time for me to sit in my office while my brothers and sisters are in pain, are hungry, and are in need,” he declared. I went to see things for myself as a result.
“Houses have been submerged, roads have been inundated, and now there are internal displacements. We have looked for some high ground where we can temporarily relocate some of them. Palliative care and medications are also now offered.

“I came out to give the people comfort, to let them know that their government is there for them in their hour of need.
“Water has no regard for anyone, since my home is currently inundated in my neighborhood. Therefore, everyone should be vigilant and powerful during this time, but especially women. You shouldn’t let your kids play in the water. Though it is a very tempting time, I have faith that God will deliver us.
“The first payment, worth N450 million, has my approval to help the people. Having witnessed the situation firsthand, we will appropriate extra funds so that our people may eat while they undergo this trauma, he said.
