Civil society organizations thronged the main thoroughfares of Benin City, Edo State on Monday, in a show of disapproval over the recent rise in petrol prices and the resulting hardships.
The organizations operating under the banner of the Edo Civil Society Organisations bemoaned the excessive cost of government demonstrated by politicians at the expense of the underprivileged Nigerians.
The organizations contend that before putting the plan into effect, the federal government should have offered palliatives to ease the pain of removing gasoline subsidies.
Keep in mind that on Tuesday, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited raised the cost of fuel from N550 to N617 per liter in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu announced the termination of fuel subsidies in his inauguration speech, which caused the price of a liter of gasoline nationwide to jump from N197 to almost N500.
In an effort to lessen Nigerians’ suffering, Tinubu suggested giving N8,000 to 12 million homes for six months. However, the proposal was abandoned after a storm of criticism.
In response to everything mentioned above, protesters in Edo took to the streets with a number of placards bearing various slogans, including “FG Fix Our Refineries,” “Kill Corruption, not Nigerians,” “Poor Nigerians Lives Matter,” “We Say No To Constant Increment In PMS,” “How Did NNPCL Become Fuel Price Regulator,” “N8,000 Palliatives,” and “What An Insult.”
Nigerians are now suffering since the rise in gas prices has had a negative impact on the cost of life, raising the cost of transportation, food, and other products and services.
