Mbang, Emeritus Methodist Prelate, Dies At 86

Dr. Sunday Mbang, a former prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, has passed away.

Dr. Sunday Mbang had an influential earthly ministry for 44 years before passing away peacefully in his sleep on May 16, 2023, at the age of 86.

Mbang’s passing was confirmed by Methodist Church of Nigeria Conference Secretary Rt. Rev. Babatunde Taiwo in a statement on Wednesday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Mbang, who enrolled at Trinity College in Umuahia in 1962, served as the head of the Methodist Church in Nigeria for the longest time. Until his death, he also served as a trustee for the Methodist Church in Nigeria, the World Methodist Council, and the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council.

According to NAN, he was the first Patriarch Champlain and Bishop of the Methodist Church in Tinubu, Lagos, as well as the only individual to have the dual roles of Patriarch and Prelate.

Dr. Sunday Mbang was also the first black President of the World Methodist Council and one of the Fathers of Faith founders, who prayed for and supported Umo Eno, the current candidate for governor of Akwa Ibom and successor to Gov. Udom Emmanuel.
