Education Minister Tasks WAEC On Curbing Exam Malpractice

BY DAYO ADESULU

Nigeria Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has appealed to the authorities of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to intensify more efforts in curbing examinations malpractice which he described as prevalent among students today.

He said: ”I wish to express my deep displeasure over the endemic phenomenon of examination malpractice, which has continued to pervade all sectors of our educational system, in spite of the efforts of the Council to check the menace.”

Adamu who spoke during the ongoing WAEC 70th Annual Council Meeting in Abuja appealed not only to the Council but to all stakeholders, to embark on concerted efforts to stem the tide.

”I urge the Council not to rest on its oars in evolving strategies and initiatives which would eliminate the incidence of examination malpractice in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination diets,” he said.

The Minister in the same vein also lauded the exceptional students who have distinguished themselves in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2021 and will be honoured with the WAEC International Excellence Awards and the National Distinction/Merit Awards for outstanding performance.

He said: ”I have been informed that three candidates who had distinguished themselves in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2021 will be honoured with the WAEC International Excellence Awards and the National Distinction/Merit Awards for outstanding performance today.

”To these winners, I say congratulations on your remarkable performances, which have earned you the well-deserved International Excellence Awards and the National Distinction/Merit Awards.

”The Awards should be a challenge to all students in our secondary schools and serve as a strong motivation to them to be dedicated to their studies. It is my sincere hope,

”I am also aware that two eminent and distinguished personalities, who are among Nigeria’s foremost academics and educationists, will be conferred with the Council’s Distinguished Friend of Council Award today. No doubt, these worthy ambassadors must have contributed immensely to the development of the Council in numerous ways.”

Adamu, however, acknowledged that in spite of all the myriad of problems plaguing the education sector in Nigeria, the Council has remained a success story in the conduct of quality public examinations. He said, ”WAEC certificates have continued to enjoy global acceptability. The Council has also continued to be a shining symbol and an effective player in regional cooperation and integration among the English-speaking countries of the sub-region.
