How Babcock Cardiac Centre Saves Nigeria N100bn Annual Medical Tourism

By DAYO ADESULU

Babcock University Cardiac Centre has successfully performed over 300 open heart surgeries that were often carried out in the past by foreign hospitals

The academic success of the Babcock Teaching Hospital has therefore saved Nigeria the N100 billion it loses annually to medical tourism.

Speaking with journalists during a media parley held on the institution’s campus, Ogun State, its President/Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ademola Tayo said: ”Today, our Cardiac Centre has performed over 300 open-heart surgeries at the Babcock University Teaching Hospital.

”BUTH has also performed several total knee cap replacement and spinal surgeries, thereby assisting the nation in saving millions of hard-earned foreign exchange.

”Available records reveal that Nigeria loses over N100 billion annually to medical tourism.

”Babcock is maintaining its premier lead in Medicine and Nursing and as top ten in Computing Engineering and in Social Work.”

According to Professor Tayo, for over twenty years, Babcock has significantly contributed to national socio-political, industrial and cultural development through innovations and inventions in Science, Medicine and Technology.

He said that informed why he took it as a pinch of salt when recently the social media news attempted to besmirch the University.

”Recent social media news have attempted to besmirch the University, but we are undaunted in the face of such challenges,” Prof Tayo said.

”Our latest accolades bear witness to this: Muyiwa Abiru a Second Class Upper student of Babcock University emerged as the overall best graduate in Bar Examinations in 2019 in Nigeria.

”This has, therefore, sustained our record of producing Nigerian Law School’s top graduating students for more than three consecutive years.

This same year 2019, 10 students from Babcock University graduated from Nigerian Law Schools with First Class.

”Similarly, Chioma Echebiri, a student of our School of Law & Security Studies emerged third in the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN) 2019 Scholarship Award.

”In 2018, Moyosore Eigbefor, our student, was the best in the professional Accounting examinations (London, Canada and Nigeria centres).

”To the glory of God, we have maintained the World Branding Awards in the Education category in the last five years, (2015 – 2019).

”We hope to break new records as we eagerly await the commencement of our School of Environmental Studies as well as Distance and e-learning programs.

”In very recent times, our institution, faculty, students and alumni have recorded outstanding performances that continue to bear testimony to the efficacy of our educational philosophy and pedagogical approach.

”Currently, the university is running 32 programs fully accredited by the National Universities Commission, as well as several other international bodies such as the International Board of Education (IBE) and Accrediting Association of Adventists (AAA).

”These bodies ensure that we remain locally and nationally relevant but at the same time, that we are uniquely globally competitive and internationally renowned.

”I daresay no other private university in Nigeria has the same advantage,” Professor Tayo said.
