In the upcoming election, the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council is urging Nigerians to vote against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
This was said in a statement released on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, the organization’s director of media and publicity.
He was responding to a divisive statement made by Atiku on Saturday during the Arewa town hall policy discussion in Kaduna.
In a widely shared video of the occasion, Atiku declared, “What the average Northerner wants is somebody who is from the North; he doesn’t need a Yoruba candidate or an Ibo candidate.”
In response, Onanuga stated that Atiku’s comment demonstrates his desperation “in the face of certain defeat.”
“The claim made by Alhaji Abubakar Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, that Northerners don’t need a Yoruba or Igbo president is the worst example of ethnocentric opportunism ever made by a former Vice President of Nigeria.
This exemplifies how far a guy who holds the second-highest office under the Nigerian Constitution is prepared to go in his never-ending quest for the top position in the nation.
The claim that Atiku has been using the North’s populace and elite as a stepping stone to the presidency since 1989 without reaping any rewards is supported by this evidence.

In his now-famous address, Atiku expanded on this statement, saying: “What the typical Northerner needs is somebody who is from the north, understands that area of the country, and has been able to develop bridges throughout the country. The Northerner does not require a Yoruba or Igbo candidate; rather, it requires this. I’m a northern-born Pan-Nigerian who stands before you.
Atiku, who fraudulently obtained the PDP nomination, has positioned himself as a northern candidate who should only receive support from residents of his region. We consider Atiku’s public statement, in which he presented himself as an ethnic and regional champion, to be unworthy of a guy who had previously served as Nigeria’s vice president.
“However, we are not shocked by his precarious situation. Knowing that his chances of winning the election are now a mirage, Atiku has turned to inflaming ethnic prejudices. He is the only one to blame for his anticipated election failure. In his party and the nation as a whole, he first violated the fundamental principles of power rotation.
“As if this egregious transgression weren’t bad enough, the PDP candidate has resisted criticism by keeping the two highest positions in his party for locals.
The general populace of Nigeria now understands that the man running for office under the guise of uniting our diverse groups is actually a tribal jingoist who has completely abandoned any pretense of being a detribalized Nigerian. He clearly embodies the opposite of a pan-Nigerian politician. Good-hearted Nigerians should vote against Atiku and his party in the general election in February if they want to see a united and successful country.
Even though it is one of the five pillars of Atiku’s purported “Covenant with Nigerians,” he just gives it lip regard. He is now completely exposed in front of the Nigerian people; the façade is over.
