Nigeria To Host WAEC 70th Annual Council Meeting March 14

Nigeria is set to host other African member countries of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC during its 70th Annual Council Meeting slated for March 14-18, 2022 at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

WAEC Head of National Office, Nigeria, Mr Patrick Areghan disclosed this on Monday in Lagos during a press briefing on the Council’s 70th annual council meeting.

He said the Council meeting which is the highest policy-making body of WAEC will witness the presence of President Muhammadu Buhari declaring the ceremony open.

The HNO also pointed out that Professor Ngozi Azuka Osarenren, an eminent scholar from the Educational Foundation Department at the University of Lagos, UNILAG will deliver the lecture of the day.

Areghan explained that the Annual Council Meeting of WAEC is rotated amongst the five-member countries, adding that the last time the Nigeria National Office hosted the meeting was in 2017.

Membership of Council, he noted includes Government Nominees, Representatives of Universities, Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools, and Other Interests.

”The Council meets annually to review the activities and operations of its various Committees and National Offices in the Five Member Countries,” he said.

Explaining the functions of the Council Annual Meeting, the HNO said the Council seizes the opportunity to ratify the decisions taken on its behalf by its Committees the previous year and deliberates on action plans for the successful execution of its operations and activities in the coming year.

”The Annual Council Meeting is held on a rotational basis among the five-member countries and it is used to deliberate on providing qualitative and reliable educational assessment; encouraging academic and moral excellence; promoting sustainable human resource development and promoting international cooperation among the five member countries.

”The Annual Council Meeting also affords the host country a rare opportunity to interact with stakeholders in the education sector, members of the diplomatic corps, as well as opportunity to showcase its economic, cultural and tourism potentials.

”It is a big media event, which communicates to the general public and the international community, the policy thrust of the Government of the host country on educational matters,” he said.
