Ex-NUC Boss: Why I Opted For BUK Over The University That Offered Me N20m Monthly

Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, the recently-retired Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), has shared how he turned down a university’s offer of N20 million.
The voluntary retirement of Rasheed, a former vice chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK), from NUC, was announced last week, three years before the end of his term.
Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed has publicly stated his desire to go on teaching at BUK.
When former President Muhammadu Buhari chose him to lead the organization that regulates universities, he was BUK VC.
Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed explained why he resigned during a reception hosted by the university to welcome him back, adding that he did so in order to continue teaching until he is eligible for retirement.
The finest job I’ve ever had, he declared, was teaching. But eventually, circumstances do arise that force me to leave the university setting.
“I once left for six years to lead the now-defunct New Nigeria, but I resigned voluntarily from the university, and this time also, I left NUC for the university so I can retire there, despite having more than three more years to the end of my tenure,” he said.

The don further stated that after leaving the NUC, a private institution offered to pay him a salary of one million Naira per month if he agreed to work there, but he turned down the offer since BUK is so important to him.
When asked why there were so many private universities in Nigeria, Prof. Rasheed said that additional public and private institutions were still needed to meet the nation’s yearly admission demands.
“The ones we have should be expanded, while new ones need to be established because they are never enough,” he continued.
The BUK VC, Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas, who also spoke at the event and referred to Rasheed as the architect of the current BUK, claimed that Rasheed’s presence at NUC had helped the institution reach its present status.
Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed has aided BUK in numerous ways as the Executive Secretary of the NUC, linking us with important individuals in Abuja among them. Because of this, it broke many of our hearts when he made the decision to leave his position before the end of his second term, but we had to accept his choice. We are happy he is back at BUK,” Prof. Abbas continued.
