The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has organized a statewide demonstration, but the Lamidi Apapa section of the Labour Party (LP) has condemned it.
Workers in Nigeria can protest the country’s increasing suffering by refusing to go to work until their demands are satisfied by the Federal Government, according to the faction, which has been engaged in a constant conflict with the one led by Julius Abure.
Abayomi Arabambi, the faction’s national publicity secretary, acknowledged that the elimination of the subsidy has made Nigerians’ hardship worse when he talked to reporters in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He warned, however, that the NLC’s order to affiliates and state councils to gather supporters for a national demonstration “is capable of setting Nigerians against the Tinubu Administration for violent overthrow.”
“Our party noted that the NLC president Comrade Joe Ajaero accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of showing enormous contempt for the Nigerian people and workers by declaring a war of attrition on Nigerian workers and masses without any care, leaving them to the throes of hopelessness and helplessness,” he said.
The Labour Party only agrees with the NLC leadership on legitimate demands, but it completely rejects a resolution calling for widespread protests. Calling for Nigerians to mobilise and take independent action against a legitimate administration, even to the point of ordering associations, persons, and other entities—including those already present on the streets—to guarantee that the government pays attention to the people, wherever they may be, is a call that should be heeded.
