The Nigeria Police Force’s National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has warned the public to be on the lookout for false information concerning 5G network services that is spreading on social media.
The call was made in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja by CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force’s Public Relations Officer.
He said that the information reportedly came from the NPF-NCCC and informed the public of the start of the migration protocols to the 5G network services and warned of potential breaches.
According to Adejobi, the material was a ruse used by subversive forces to lay the groundwork for potential phishing and cyber-attacks.
He said that the NPF-Director NCCC’s in charge, Mr. Henry Uche, and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) had severed ties with the facility from the message.
Uche stated that the message was fake and warned the public to be on their guard, adding that it was probably the work of cybercriminals.
“The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) hereby warns members of the public and strategic stakeholders in national security matters to be wary of a suspected plot by subversive elements to lay the groundwork for likely phishing and cyber-attacks through the deliberate publication and dissemination of a WhatsApp message, currently in circulation, allegedly from the Cybercrime Department of the Nigeria Police Force informing the public that the Nigerian Police Force has launched a cybercrime investigation into a recent cyber.
“DCP Uche Ifeanyi Henry, the director in charge of the NPF-NCCC, has noticed that the message did not originate from the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre and warns the public to be cautious as it is likely the creation of cyber criminals, laying the groundwork to rob innocent and unsuspecting members of the public of their money or to steal their identities.
The general public is now warned to disregard and stop disseminating the broadcast message since it is false and misleading. On the official websites and authenticated social media accounts of the NPF-NCCC, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Telecom Companies, and other communication service providers, accurate guidance on the roll-out and migration to the 5G network will be made available in due course.(NAN)
