NAF Operation Targets Bandits, Civilians Caught in the Crossfire
16 Vigilantes Killed in Suspected Accidental Bombing
A tragic airstrike reportedly claimed the lives of 16 vigilantes in Kakindawa village, Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State, on Saturday. The vigilantes were en route to Tungar Kara village to assist residents under attack by bandits when they were hit by the airstrike.
According to eyewitness Garba Umar, a drone hovered over the area moments before the explosion.
“The bandits had already left the area when the aircraft appeared and dropped a bomb on the vigilantes,” Umar said. “We counted 16 casualties, including my son.”
NAF Operation Fansar Yamma: Bandits Targeted
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) confirmed carrying out an air and ground assault on Fakai Hills, targeting bandits loyal to notorious leader Kachallah Bello Turji.
NAF spokesperson, AVM Olusola Akinboyewa, reported significant success in neutralizing bandits and freeing kidnapped victims.
“Operation Fansar Yamma delivered a crushing blow to banditry in Zamfara State,” Akinboyewa stated, adding that the operation severely disrupted Turji’s network.
Civilian Casualties Confirmed
Zamfara State Governor, Lawal Dauda, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased vigilantes.
“We deeply regret the loss of our brave JTF and vigilante members. Their sacrifices will not go in vain,” said Sulaiman Bala, the governor’s spokesman.
The Public Relations Officer of Operation Fansar Yamma, Lt. Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, announced that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the tragic incident.
Community Reels from Devastation
The airstrike, which occurred around 3:30 p.m., destroyed one building and left many questioning the accuracy of the operation.
“The vigilantes were about to assist Tungar Kara when the airstrike hit,” Umar explained.
The community mourns the loss while calling on authorities to ensure such incidents do not recur.
Recent Airstrike History Raises Concerns
The tragedy follows a Christmas Day airstrike in Silame Local Government Area, where an attack targeting Lakurawa terrorists accidentally killed 10 villagers.
These incidents have sparked debates over the precision of military operations in conflict zones and the need for stricter protocols to prevent civilian casualties.
Zamfara State Government’s Stance
The state government praised the military’s efforts in combating banditry but emphasized the importance of safeguarding civilian lives.
“The government stands firmly with the families of the victims and will provide necessary support,” Bala assured.
NAF Assures of Continued Commitment
The Nigerian Air Force reiterated its dedication to eradicating criminality while minimizing collateral damage.
“Together, we will defeat all enemies militating against the security of our territories,” Akinboyewa emphasized.
