Kano State has been plunged into deep mourning following the sudden and tragic death of two serving members of the Kano State House of Assembly within the space of one hour, an unprecedented development that has shaken the political and legislative community across the state.
The lawmakers, Hon. Aminu Sa’adu, who represented Ungoggo Local Government Area, and Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, who represented Kano Municipal Local Government Area, both passed away on Wednesday under circumstances that have triggered widespread shock, grief, and speculation.
Hon. Aminu Sa’adu Slumps at Assembly, Dies in Hospital
The first tragedy occurred when Hon. Aminu Sa’adu reportedly arrived at the Kano State House of Assembly for legislative duties and suddenly fell ill shortly after. Colleagues and staff were said to have immediately raised alarm as his condition deteriorated.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. Despite efforts by medical personnel, the lawmaker could not be saved and was later pronounced dead. News of his passing spread rapidly within the Assembly complex and beyond, leaving fellow lawmakers visibly shaken.
Hon. Sa’adu’s death marked the beginning of what would become one of the darkest days in the recent history of the Kano State legislature.
Second Lawmaker, Sarki Aliyu Daneji, Dies an Hour Later
Barely one hour after the death of Hon. Aminu Sa’adu, tragedy struck again.
Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, a lawmaker representing Kano Municipal constituency, also passed away. The shocking development was officially confirmed by Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the spokesperson to the Kano State Governor, through a post on his verified Facebook page.
“Innalillahi Wa Inna Ilaihirrajiun. Hon. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, member representing Kano Municipal at Kano State House of Assembly, died today an hour after the death of his counterpart,” the governor’s spokesperson wrote.
The confirmation sent shockwaves across Kano and Nigeria’s political space, with many struggling to comprehend how two sitting legislators could die within such a short interval.
Tributes Pour In as Assembly, Constituents Mourn
Both lawmakers were widely regarded as active, vocal, and committed legislators, known for their participation in debates and constituency-related matters. Their sudden deaths have left colleagues, constituents, party members, and observers in deep sorrow.
Within minutes of the announcements, tributes, prayers, and condolence messages flooded social media, particularly from fellow politicians, civil servants, community leaders, and residents of Ungoggo and Kano Municipal areas.
Many described the incident as heartbreaking, painful, and deeply unsettling, noting that the lawmakers were actively discharging their duties up until their final moments.
Kano Government Yet to Release Full Details
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Government has not released detailed information regarding the medical circumstances or causes surrounding the deaths of the two lawmakers.
Officials said further updates would be provided in due course, as families, the Assembly leadership, and relevant authorities coordinate next steps, including burial arrangements in line with Islamic rites.
The absence of immediate details has fueled calls from members of the public for transparency and clarity, even as many caution against speculation during a period of grief.
Unprecedented Loss for Kano Legislature
Political analysts and legislative observers say the development is rare and unprecedented in Kano’s recent political history, describing the loss of two lawmakers in one day as a significant blow to the Assembly’s institutional memory and representation.
The incident is also expected to trigger by-elections in the affected constituencies once official procedures are concluded.
For now, however, the focus remains on mourning the dead and supporting their families, colleagues, and constituents during this difficult time.
A State in Mourning
As Kano grapples with the loss, flags at the Assembly complex were lowered, and legislative activities were subdued as lawmakers struggled to come to terms with the events.
Residents across the state continue to express disbelief, united in grief over the sudden loss of two public servants who left home for work but never returned.
