By DAYO ADESULU

The NAYO gerian gospel music community has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular gospel singer and evangelist, Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye, widely known by fans as Omije Ojumi, after her breakout hit song of the same title.

The news of Omije Ojumi’s death was officially announced on Tuesday via Instagram by her colleague, gospel artiste Ayo Melody, who spoke on behalf of the bereaved family. The statement was accompanied by a photograph of the late singer and a brief video clip, triggering an outpouring of grief across social media.

According to the announcement, the gospel singer died in a Lagos hospital on January 12, 2026.

“With great sadness, we announce the passing of Evangelist Olubunmi Akinnaanu Adeoye, OMIJE OJUMI, who passed away on 12th January, 2026, at a Lagos hospital, Nigeria. May God grant her eternal rest,” the statement read.

The message was signed by Olawale Akinnaanu on behalf of the family.

Family Keeps Cause of Death Private

As of the time of filing this report, the family has not disclosed the cause of Omije Ojumi’s death. However, her passing has reignited conversations around a health challenge she openly spoke about months before her demise.

In late 2025, the gospel singer had publicly appealed for prayers after developing a serious leg complication, which she said had affected her mobility and daily activities. The situation drew widespread concern among fans, church members, and fellow gospel musicians.

Viral Prayer Video Raised Public Concern

In October 2025, a video that later went viral showed Omije Ojumi seated during a church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, with one leg stretched on a chair as a cleric prayed for her.

During the prayer session, the pastor referenced persistent bleeding from the leg, describing the ailment as a spiritual attack and calling on divine intervention for healing. The clip sparked mixed reactions online, with many expressing sympathy while others debated the spiritual framing of health challenges.

Despite the public attention, there has been no official confirmation linking the leg condition to her eventual death. Family sources have remained silent on medical details, urging the public to respect their privacy during the mourning period.

From Banking Career to Gospel Ministry

Beyond the tragedy of her passing, Omije Ojumi’s life story remains a powerful testimony of conviction and purpose. Born with a passion for music, she began singing at a young age, actively participating in church choirs and evangelical outreaches.

Before fully embracing gospel music, Akinnaanu worked in the banking sector, a career path she later abandoned to answer what she described as a divine calling into full-time gospel ministry. The decision, though risky at the time, would eventually define her legacy.

Rise to Fame With “Omije Ojumi”

Her breakthrough came with the release of “Omije Ojumi”, a deeply emotional worship song that resonated strongly with believers across Nigeria. The track became a staple in churches, prayer meetings, and Christian homes, earning her nationwide recognition.

Following the success of the song, Omije Ojumi released other notable tracks, including “O Ti Sure,” further cementing her place in Nigeria’s gospel music space. Known for her heartfelt delivery and spiritually charged lyrics, she built a loyal following that cut across denominations.

Tributes Pour In From Gospel Community

Since the announcement of Omije Ojumi’s death, fellow gospel artistes, pastors, and fans have taken to social media to share tributes, testimonies, and condolence messages. Many described her as humble, prayerful, and deeply committed to her faith.

Several church leaders also acknowledged her impact on worship culture, noting that her songs brought comfort to people during moments of grief, repentance, and thanksgiving.

A Painful Loss to Nigerian Gospel Music

The death of Omije Ojumi marks another painful loss for Nigeria’s gospel music industry, which has witnessed the passing of several influential voices in recent years. While her voice has been silenced, her songs continue to echo in worship spaces nationwide.

As burial arrangements and memorial plans are awaited, fans and colleagues alike continue to pray for strength for the Akinnaanu family.

For many, Omije Ojumi’s legacy will remain one of faith, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to God.
