The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed the killing of a senior Hamas field commander accused of participating in the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel and later helping to hold several Israeli hostages captive in the Gaza Strip.
The IDF identified the slain Hamas operative as Muhammad Bassam Muhammad Mushtaha, a company commander in the Shati’ Battalion of Hamas’ military wing. According to the Israeli military, Mushtaha was struck in northern Gaza about two weeks ago, with his death now officially confirmed.
Hamas Commander Linked to October 7 Attack
The IDF said Mushtaha infiltrated Israeli territory during the October 7 assault and participated in the attacks that left communities in southern Israel devastated and resulted in the capture of numerous hostages.
Israeli authorities have accused him of subsequently playing a role in holding several hostages during the war.
Among those the IDF said were held captive were Tsachi Idan, Corporal Noa Marciano, Ziv Berman, Omri Miran, Ori Megidish, Naama Levy and Matan Angrest.
The military described Mushtaha as a company commander within the Shati’ Battalion and said his role extended beyond the initial October 7 assault to activities during the subsequent conflict.
IDF Says Mushtaha Continued Planning Attacks
According to the IDF, Mushtaha had recently been involved in efforts to advance attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians.
The Israeli military said the threat posed by the Hamas commander contributed to the decision to target him.
“The terrorist attempted to advance terror attacks against IDF troops and Israeli civilians and was subsequently eliminated in order to remove the threat,” the IDF said in its statement.
The military did not provide further operational details about the planned attacks or the circumstances surrounding the strike.
Israel Says Measures Were Taken to Protect Civilians
The IDF said it took measures before carrying out the strike to reduce the potential risk to civilians in the area.
According to the military, the operation involved the use of precision-guided munitions as well as aerial surveillance.
Israel has repeatedly said its forces attempt to minimize civilian casualties during operations in Gaza, while Palestinian officials and international organizations have continued to raise concerns about the humanitarian consequences of Israeli military operations in the territory.
IDF Forces Remain in Northern Gaza
The Israeli military also said troops operating under the Southern Command remain deployed in the Gaza Strip in accordance with the existing agreement.
The IDF said its forces would continue operating against what it describes as threats to Israeli troops and civilians.
The announcement comes as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to involve military operations, hostage-related developments and diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing the wider Gaza crisis.
Why the Killing Matters
The reported elimination of Mushtaha could be significant because of the allegations surrounding his involvement in both the October 7 attacks and the captivity of Israeli hostages.
For Israel, targeting commanders accused of organizing or supporting attacks remains a central component of its military strategy. However, such operations continue to attract intense international scrutiny because of the risks to civilians in densely populated areas of Gaza.
The case also highlights the continuing importance of hostage-related intelligence in Israel’s military campaign, particularly as families of captives continue to seek information about their relatives.
The IDF’s latest statement did not provide independent evidence detailing Mushtaha’s specific role in each hostage case, and the allegations remain claims made by the Israeli military.
Conclusion
The IDF has confirmed the death of Muhammad Bassam Muhammad Mushtaha, describing him as a Hamas company commander who participated in the October 7 attacks and later helped hold several Israeli hostages in Gaza.
Israel says Mushtaha was killed in a targeted strike in northern Gaza after allegedly attempting to advance further attacks against Israeli forces and civilians. The IDF added that precision weapons and aerial surveillance were used to reduce the risk to civilians.
