Dangote Cement Plc has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment and industrial capacity building with the successful implementation of its Dangote Cement Graduate Trainee Programme, a flagship initiative designed to equip newly graduated engineers with world-class technical skills and hands-on industry exposure.
The programme, which targets young Nigerian engineers at the early stages of their careers, is positioned as a strategic response to the country’s growing need for skilled manpower in the manufacturing and heavy industrial sectors. Company executives say the initiative goes beyond classroom learning, immersing participants directly in real-life plant operations, systems optimisation, and engineering problem-solving.

Investing in Nigeria’s Youth as a National Asset
Speaking on the objective of the programme, Ahmed Ladan Gobir, a senior executive at Dangote Cement, described the Graduate Trainee Programme as a deliberate investment in Nigeria’s most valuable resource — its young people.
“Nigeria’s greatest asset is its young people, and at Dangote Cement we are intentional about empowering them with the skills, exposure, and opportunities required to succeed,” Gobir said.
According to him, the programme is structured to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industrial practice, ensuring that young engineers are not only employable but also capable of driving innovation and productivity within the manufacturing sector.
“Through initiatives such as our Graduate Trainee Programme, we are providing young engineers with a platform to build meaningful careers, contribute to national development, and emerge as the next generation of African industrial leaders,” he added.

Hands-On Training with Global Industry Standards
Unlike conventional graduate schemes that rely heavily on theoretical instruction, the Dangote Cement Graduate Trainee Programme places strong emphasis on practical, hands-on industrial experience.
Participants are exposed to core cement production processes, plant maintenance operations, automation systems, and performance optimisation techniques across Dangote Cement’s major facilities. This approach, the company says, ensures that trainees gain a deep understanding of real operational challenges while working under experienced industry professionals.
From mechanical alignments to digital reporting systems, trainees are required to actively contribute to ongoing projects, reinforcing both technical competence and professional confidence.

Four Graduate Trainees Recognised for Outstanding Performance
As part of the programme’s assessment and recognition framework, four graduate engineers were recently honoured for their exceptional performance and contributions.
Programme Coordinator Mr. Iyal H. Abdulkareem explained that the awardees distinguished themselves through consistent excellence, innovation, and strong hands-on industrial competence throughout the training period.
“These engineers demonstrated exceptional technical ability, problem-solving skills, and commitment to operational excellence,” Abdulkareem said.
He noted that the recognition was based on measurable impact, teamwork, and the ability to apply engineering principles effectively within high-pressure industrial environments.

Measurable Contributions to Plant Operations
According to Abdulkareem, the award-winning trainees made significant contributions across multiple operational areas within Dangote Cement’s plants.
Their achievements included:
Improving internal reporting and customer administration systems
Undertaking raw mill and cement mill main drive alignments
Carrying out preheater fan dynamic balancing to enhance plant efficiency
Developing structured templates for documenting and tracking key plant performance indicators (KPIs)
These interventions, he said, contributed directly to operational efficiency, improved system reliability, and better performance monitoring across production units.

Supporting Digital Infrastructure and Plant Optimisation
Beyond mechanical and process-related tasks, the trainees also played a critical role in supporting Dangote Cement’s digital and automation initiatives.
The four engineers — Engr. Mary Nnana, Engr. Ahmad Sunusi Abdullahi, Engr. Ahmed Rufai Ahmed, and Engr. Ebenezer Afonja — were actively involved in the installation and commissioning of Management Information System (MIS) servers at the Obajana Plant, one of the largest cement plants in Africa.
In addition, they supported the deployment of cement mill optimisation systems at both the Obajana and Okpella plants, helping to enhance production efficiency, reduce downtime, and improve data-driven decision-making.
Industry analysts say such exposure places the trainees at a significant advantage, as digital transformation becomes increasingly central to modern manufacturing.

Building a Sustainable Pipeline of Industrial Leaders
Dangote Cement officials say the Graduate Trainee Programme is part of a broader long-term strategy to build a sustainable pipeline of skilled Nigerian professionals capable of sustaining industrial growth across Africa.
By combining mentorship, practical exposure, and performance-based recognition, the programme aims to reduce reliance on expatriate expertise while strengthening local capacity.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with youth unemployment and skills mismatch, initiatives like the Dangote Cement Graduate Trainee Programme are increasingly viewed as models for private-sector-led workforce development.
For the young engineers involved, the programme represents more than training — it is a launchpad into careers that directly shape national development and Africa’s industrial future.
