Fake Traditional Ruler Arrested in Lagos for Parading Himself as ‘Obi of Lagos’

By DAYO ADESULU

Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man who falsely paraded himself as the “Obi of Lagos” in an unauthorized installation ceremony. Police say the suspect, along with three accomplices, attempted to deceive the public by unveiling plans for a fake palace worth ₦1.5 billion.

The arrest was confirmed on Wednesday by the command’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, in a statement issued in Lagos.

According to Oluseyi, the suspect—an indigene of Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom, Ideato North LGA of Imo State—was arrested alongside three alleged conspirators aged 41, 51, and 65.

Police Move Swiftly to Foil Ceremony

Intelligence reports revealed that the group had finalized arrangements to launch the supposed “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on Saturday at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin.

“Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives swiftly sealed off the venue to prevent a breach of peace and protect unsuspecting members of the public from being misled,” Oluseyi stated.

He added that the command deployed conventional operatives, Eko Strike Force teams, and other tactical squads to the area to maintain peace and stop the ceremony from holding.

Suspects in Custody, Investigation Ongoing

The police spokesperson confirmed that the suspects are currently in detention while investigations continue.

“The outcome of the investigation will be made public, and the suspects will be charged to court accordingly,” Oluseyi assured.

Warning Against Impostors

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, urged Lagos residents to remain vigilant and report impostors attempting to exploit cultural and traditional institutions for personal gain.

“Such unlawful actions not only mislead the public but also undermine the integrity of Lagos State’s revered traditional institutions,” the CP said, warning that offenders would face the full wrath of the law.

The Lagos State Police Command emphasized that it will continue to act decisively against individuals or groups engaged in illegal activities capable of disrupting public order and peace.
