Integrity in Focus: WAEC Reports Decrease in Examination Malpractice as 2025 WASSCE Results Are Released

Lagos, Nigeria – August 4, 2025– The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2025. During a press briefing held at the National Office in Yaba, Lagos, Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, Head of WAEC Nigeria, expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the successful conduct of the examination, which introduced significant technological innovations.

In his address, Dr. Dangut highlighted that this year’s examination saw the introduction of a computer-based testing format, allowing candidates to choose between digital and traditional pen-and-paper methods. “This initiative marks WAEC’s commitment to enhancing the examination process through innovative service delivery,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of collaboration with federal and state educational authorities, security agencies, and other stakeholders.

Examination Statistics and Performance

A total of 1,973,365 candidates registered for the examination from 23,554 secondary schools across Nigeria. Out of this number, 1,969,313 candidates participated. Of those who sat the exam, 1,517,517 candidates (77.06%) had their results fully processed and released, while 451,796 candidates (22.94%) are pending due to unresolved issues.

  • Dr. Dangut reported notable performance statistics:
    – Overall Performance: 1,718,090 candidates (87.24%) obtained credit or above in at least five subjects, irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.
    – Performance in Key Subjects:
    – English Language: 1,250,000 candidates (63.5%) achieved credit or above.
    – Mathematics: 1,200,000 candidates (61.0%) obtained credit or above.
    – Biology: 1,300,000 candidates (66.0%) attained credit or above.
    – Economics: 1,150,000 candidates (58.0%) received credit or above. However, the results indicate a decrease compared to the previous year, with only 38.32% of candidates achieving credits in both English Language and Mathematics. This represents a 33.8% decrease from the previous year’s statistic of 72.12%.

Examination Malpractice Cases

Despite WAEC’s efforts to curb malpractice, examination irregularities remain a significant concern. This year, 192,089 candidates (9.75%) had their results withheld due to various reported cases of malpractice, a reduction from the 11.92% recorded in 2024. Dr. Dangut noted that increasing use of mobile phones during examinations and organized cheating in some schools posed ongoing challenges.

In particular, WAEC employed a serialization strategy for objective test papers in core subjects like Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics. Each candidate was assigned a unique version of the exam paper to mitigate collusion. However, some candidates managed to share answers, indicating a need for further vigilance.

Dr. Dangut condemned the actions of rogue website operators and individuals who exploit the examination period to deceive students and parents. He emphasized, “These unscrupulous elements have turned WAEC’s examination periods into a cash cow, peddling fake papers and misleading candidates.” He urged stakeholders to help combat these deceptive practices.

The Council is currently investigating all reported cases and plans to impose appropriate sanctions on supervisors and schools implicated in aiding malpractice. Dr. Dangut assured the public that WAEC remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining the integrity of examinations and promoting academic excellence.

Innovations and Future Plans

In addition to the computer-based testing for the 2025 WASSCE, WAEC announced plans for the upcoming WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2026, which will further expand the use of electronic formats. The organization has also launched several digital resources, including the WAEC e-Study platform and the WAECKONNECT mobile app, aimed at enhancing preparation for examinations.

Candidates can access their results online at www.waecdirect.org, with a digital certificate available 48 hours after results release. Hard copies of certificates will be available within 90 days.

Closing Remarks

Dr. Dangut concluded the briefing by thanking the Federal Government, various educational stakeholders, and the media for their ongoing support. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts in ensuring the success of future examinations.

As the academic year progresses, WAEC remains focused on leveraging technology to enhance educational outcomes and facilitate easier access to examination results for all candidates.
