ISWAP Attack on Borno Military Base Foiled as Katsina Community Repels Terrorists in Midnight Clash

By MOHAMMED DANBABA

Nigeria’s security forces and resilient local communities have recorded fresh successes against insurgents and terrorists, following two separate incidents in Borno and Katsina states that underline both improved military coordination and growing civilian resistance.

On January 16, 2026, fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched a coordinated assault on a Nigerian military base in Azari, Borno State. However, the attack failed after swift and decisive joint operations by Nigerian ground troops and the Air Force overwhelmed the insurgents.

Barely 24 hours earlier, residents of Idadanbawa community in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State confronted armed terrorists who attempted a late-night invasion. In a rare show of grassroots resistance, locals reportedly repelled the attackers using locally fabricated weapons.

Together, the two incidents highlight shifting dynamics in Nigeria’s counterterrorism landscape, where improved military synergy and community vigilance are increasingly frustrating terror networks.

ISWAP Attack on Borno Military Base Thwarted by Joint Operations

Military sources confirmed that ISWAP militants targeted the Azari military base in the early hours of January 16, hoping to overrun the facility and seize weapons. The insurgents, however, underestimated the preparedness of Nigerian forces stationed in the area.

According to security briefings, Nigerian Army units immediately engaged the attackers while the Air Force provided critical aerial support. The coordinated response created overwhelming pressure on the militants, forcing them into disarray.

“The collaboration between the Air Force and ground troops formed a formidable fighting force that ISWAP could not withstand,” a security source said. “The response was timely, calculated, and effective.”

As the battle intensified, air assets targeted retreating militants, while soldiers secured the perimeter of the base. Although official casualty figures were not released, multiple security sources disclosed that scores of ISWAP fighters were neutralised during the operation.

Importantly, no significant damage to military assets was reported, and the base remained firmly under government control.

Military Synergy Weakens Insurgent Momentum in Borno

The failed ISWAP attack on the Azari base adds to a growing list of insurgent setbacks in Borno State, where Nigerian forces have intensified joint land and air operations in recent months.

Security analysts note that ISWAP has increasingly relied on surprise attacks against military formations as its territorial influence continues to shrink. However, improved intelligence sharing, faster air support deployment, and better coordination between service arms are reducing the effectiveness of such tactics.

“The era when insurgents could overrun bases with minimal resistance is gradually ending,” a counterinsurgency expert observed. “What we are seeing now is a more synchronized Nigerian military response that denies terrorists the advantage of shock.”

The development also reinforces the Defence Headquarters’ repeated assurances that joint tasking between the Army and Air Force remains central to degrading terrorist capabilities in the North-East.

Katsina Community Repels Terrorists in Midnight Assault

While security forces dominated the battlefield in Borno, civilians played a decisive role in Katsina State. On the night of January 15, at about 11:45 p.m., armed terrorists reportedly stormed Idadanbawa community in Kankara Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers attempted to infiltrate the village under cover of darkness, a tactic frequently used by terror groups operating in the North-West. However, the plan backfired when residents quickly mobilised to defend their community.

According to a local source, English Alhaji, the people of Idadanbawa confronted the terrorists with locally made ammunition and other improvised defensive tools.

“Almost every house has locally made ammunition,” he said. “When the attackers came, the people stood their ground and forced them to retreat.”

The confrontation reportedly lasted for several minutes before the terrorists withdrew, abandoning their attempt to overrun the community. No confirmed fatalities were reported among residents at the time of filing this report.

Rising Community Resistance Changes the Security Equation

The successful defence of Idadanbawa reflects a broader trend across parts of Katsina, Zamfara, and Kaduna states, where communities increasingly organise self-defence measures in response to repeated attacks.

While security agencies continue to caution against vigilantism, analysts acknowledge that community alertness and rapid collective action often make it harder for terrorists to operate freely.

“Local resistance disrupts the terrorists’ element of fear,” a regional security watcher explained. “When communities refuse to flee at the first sign of danger, attackers lose confidence and operational advantage.”

However, experts also stress the need for closer collaboration between civilians and security agencies to prevent accidental harm and ensure intelligence gathered at community level feeds into formal security operations.

A Combined Front Against Terrorism

The foiled ISWAP attack in Borno and the community-led defence in Katsina underscore a common theme: terrorism thrives where coordination is weak, but retreats when faced with unified resistance.

For the Nigerian military, the Azari encounter validates ongoing investments in joint operations and air-ground integration. For local communities, the Katsina incident demonstrates the power of vigilance, unity, and timely response.

As Nigeria continues to battle insurgency and banditry across multiple regions, these developments offer cautious optimism that sustained pressure—both military and civilian—can further limit the reach of violent groups.
