NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms and Rainfall Across Nigeria From Monday to Wednesday

Abuja, Nigeria – September 14, 2025: The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather outlook predicting widespread thunderstorms and rainfall across different regions of the country between Monday, September 15, and Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

According to the statement released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet advised Nigerians—particularly motorists, farmers, and residents in flood-prone areas—to take precautionary measures as flash floods and moderate to heavy rains are expected in several states.


Monday’s Weather Forecast

  • Northern Region: Isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in the morning over Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba states. Later in the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms will extend across most parts of the north, with flash floods possible in Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe.

  • Central Region: A cloudy atmosphere with sunny intervals is anticipated in the morning, accompanied by moderate rainfall in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the FCT. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast later in the day.

  • Southern Region: Cloudy skies are expected in the morning, with moderate rains likely in Ekiti, Ondo, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states. By evening, most parts of the region will experience widespread moderate rainfall.


Tuesday’s Weather Forecast

  • Northern Region: Cloudy skies with sunshine intervals will dominate in the morning. Thunderstorms and moderate rains are expected in Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa, while afternoon storms will spread to Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Taraba.

  • Central Region: Cloudy conditions are forecast in the morning, with rains likely in Kogi, Niger, Kwara, Nasarawa, and the FCT. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected in Niger, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the FCT.

  • Southern Region: Cloudy skies with light rains are expected in Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Delta states. By afternoon, light to moderate rainfall will spread across most southern states.


Wednesday’s Weather Forecast

  • Northern Region: Cloudy skies with sunshine intervals will persist in the morning, with light rain expected in Sokoto and Zamfara. By afternoon, isolated thunderstorms with moderate rains will occur in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Sokoto.

  • Central Region: Cloudy conditions with light rain are expected in the FCT, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger states. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are likely in Benue, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger.

  • Southern Region: Cloudy skies in the morning will give way to moderate rainfall across most states in the evening.


NiMet Issues Safety Advisory

NiMet urged Nigerians to take necessary precautions during this period of unstable weather:

  • Motorists should avoid driving during heavy rainfall to reduce road accidents.

  • Farmers were advised not to apply fertilizer or pesticides immediately before rainfall to prevent nutrient leaching.

  • Residents should secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances, and avoid standing under tall trees during thunderstorms.

  • Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective flight planning and passenger safety.
