Lagos — The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained popular TikTok influencer, Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, following a viral livestream that showed him driving at excessive speed in a manner authorities described as highly dangerous and life-threatening.
The arrest comes after a video circulated widely on social media showing the influencer operating a vehicle recklessly while broadcasting live, an action that reportedly led to a serious road accident and exposed other road users to grave danger. The incident has once again ignited national debate about the growing trend of risky content creation in the race for online attention.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025, and immediately drew public outrage due to the clear safety risks involved.
Police Confirm Arrest, Launch Full Investigation
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that Peller was taken into custody shortly after the video gained traction online.
The police said the footage showed the suspect driving at a dangerous speed while livestreaming, an act that resulted in a motor accident and endangered both his life and the lives of innocent members of the public.
According to the statement, the suspect’s conduct demonstrated a blatant disregard for traffic laws and public safety.
“His action amounted to extreme self-endangerment and posed a serious threat to other road users,” the police said.
The Command disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation.
Case Headed for Prosecution
The police further stated that upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspect would be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with the law.
“The case is currently under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department. Findings from the investigation will be made public, and the suspect will be prosecuted as appropriate,” the statement added.
The Lagos Police Command stressed that the arrest was not targeted at suppressing creativity or social media expression, but rather aimed at enforcing the law and preventing avoidable tragedies on public roads.
Commissioner Issues Strong Warning to Influencers
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Olohundare Jimoh, issued a stern warning to social media influencers, content creators, and members of the public against using online platforms to promote or engage in dangerous and unlawful behaviour.
According to him, the Command would no longer tolerate acts that put lives at risk under the guise of entertainment or content creation.
“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, strongly warns social media influencers and content creators to desist from engaging in or promoting reckless, dangerous, or criminal acts on digital platforms,” the statement said.
He emphasized that fame, followers, or online popularity would not shield anyone from the consequences of violating the law.
“Such lawlessness will not be tolerated. The full weight of the law will be applied to any offender, regardless of social status or online following,” the statement added.
Rising Concern Over Reckless Online Content
The arrest of Peller highlights growing concerns among law enforcement agencies and the public over the increasing number of dangerous stunts performed for online engagement. In recent years, social media platforms have witnessed a surge in risky behaviours, including unsafe driving, public disturbances, and harmful pranks, often filmed live to attract views and monetization.
Safety advocates warn that such content not only places creators at risk but also encourages imitation among young followers, potentially leading to tragic consequences.
Police authorities reiterated that public roads are not stages for entertainment and that traffic laws exist to protect all road users.
Police Reaffirm Commitment to Public Safety
The Lagos State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining order across the state. The Command urged motorists to obey traffic regulations strictly and reminded residents that reckless driving remains a major cause of road accidents in Lagos.
The police also encouraged the public to report dangerous behaviour promptly and to avoid sharing content that promotes unsafe or unlawful acts.
As investigations continue, the case serves as a strong reminder that digital influence comes with responsibility, and that actions carried out online can have serious legal consequences offline.
For now, authorities say the message is clear: no level of online popularity justifies conduct that puts lives at risk.
