Moscow/London — Russian President Vladimir Putin has stepped up diplomatic efforts with key Gulf Arab leaders, warning that ongoing U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran risk igniting a wider regional conflict that could draw in neighbouring states and destabilise energy markets. His comments come amid intense global concern over a rapid escalation in the Middle East that has already spread beyond Iran’s borders.
In a series of phone calls on March 2, 2026, Putin spoke directly with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Qatar, emphasising the danger that continued military action against Iran could erupt into a broader war engulfing the Persian Gulf region. Putin urged for urgent diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation and protect civilian lives.
Putin Offers Russian Mediation as Violence Spreads
Putin condemned the strikes carried out by the United States and Israel, which were launched after Tehran was hit in a joint attack that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior officials over the weekend. He labelled the bombings as “unprovoked aggression” and reiterated that Russia remains in direct contact with Iranian leadership as it seeks a diplomatic resolution.
