Explosion Levels Building, Causes Damage Across 2 Kilometers; Authorities Launch Investigation
Residents of Umuneke Obazu Mbieri, a community in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, were jolted awake in the early hours of Sunday by a devastating explosion suspected to have been caused by a bomb or drone attack.
Eyewitness Accounts: Drone Hovering Before the Blast
According to residents, a suspected drone was seen hovering over Umuneke Obazu and neighboring communities around 1:00 a.m. Just ten minutes later, a thunderous explosion shook the area, destroying one building and damaging several others.
A local resident recounted:
“We were awoken by the sound of a drone hovering above us, and before we knew it, there was a massive explosion. We’re still trying to process what has happened.”
The blast’s impact reportedly extended over two kilometers from the epicenter, leaving the community in shock and fear.
Local Leaders Call for Calm Amid Investigation
The Chairman of Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Hon. Ifunanya Nwanegwo, and the Secretary General of Obazu Autonomous Community, Hon. Emeka Nosiri, visited the scene and assured residents that the cause of the explosion is under investigation.
They urged the community to remain calm while authorities work to determine the source and nature of the explosion.
Police and Anti-Bomb Unit Step In
The DPO of Mbieri Police Division, Supol Wet Ben, also visited the site. The police announced that their anti-bomb unit would join the investigation to uncover the details behind the incident.
Community Leaders Demand Government Action
The President of the Udodiri Family Meeting, Umuneke Obazu Mbieri, Emeka Arimanwa, confirmed the incident and called on the government to take swift action to protect residents.
“We hope that the government will take immediate action to ensure our safety and security,” he said.
Ongoing Investigations and Security Concerns
As residents come to terms with the incident, they are turning to the government for answers and reassurance. The explosion has heightened fears about the security situation in the area, with many questioning the suspected drone activity.
