U.S. Congressman Urges Tinubu Government to Protect Christians After ISWAP Issues ‘Convert or Die’ Threat

U.S. Congress

By DAYO ADESULU

A United States lawmaker has called on the administration of to urgently strengthen protection for Christians in Nigeria’s northeastern region following a disturbing ultimatum reportedly issued by the terrorist group .

The group, widely known as ISWAP, is said to have issued a chilling “convert or die” warning to Christian communities in parts of Nigeria’s troubled northeast, raising fresh fears about religious persecution and worsening insecurity in the region.

U.S. Lawmaker Raises Alarm

Reacting to the reports, U.S. Congressman urged Nigerian authorities to act swiftly to prevent what he described as a looming humanitarian and religious freedom crisis.

Smith, who chairs the House Subcommittee on Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations, warned that extremist threats targeting civilians based on their faith must not go unchecked.

According to the congressman, the ultimatum allegedly issued by ISWAP represents a grave violation of fundamental human rights and religious freedom. He stressed that Nigeria’s government must prioritize the safety of vulnerable communities facing intimidation and violence.

“Reports of extremists demanding religious conversion under threat of death are deeply troubling,” Smith reportedly said, adding that the Nigerian government must ensure that all citizens—regardless of faith—are protected.

ISWAP Threat Raises Fresh Security Concerns

The extremist faction emerged from a split within the terrorist organization and has since become one of the most active militant groups operating in Nigeria’s northeast.

ISWAP has carried out numerous attacks across Borno and neighboring states, targeting military formations, humanitarian workers, and civilians.

Security analysts say the group has increasingly tried to enforce strict ideological control in areas under its influence, often imposing harsh rules on local populations.

The latest ultimatum, if confirmed, would mark a significant escalation in the group’s attempts to intimidate minority religious communities.

Pressure Mounts on Nigerian Government

The warning from Washington adds to growing international concern over insecurity in Nigeria’s northeast and other regions affected by insurgency and banditry.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly urged the Nigerian government to improve security operations, protect displaced communities, and ensure accountability for attacks against civilians.

While the administration of has pledged to intensify counter-terrorism efforts, many observers argue that vulnerable rural communities remain exposed to extremist threats.

Congressman Smith noted that Nigeria remains a key partner of the United States in Africa and stressed that protecting religious freedom is essential to maintaining stability.

Growing Global Attention

International observers say the reported ultimatum highlights the persistent security challenges facing Nigeria more than a decade after the insurgency began.

Although Nigerian security forces have recorded several operational successes against militant groups, insurgents continue to launch attacks in remote communities and along major transport routes.

Analysts also warn that extremist propaganda and intimidation tactics could worsen inter-religious tensions if not addressed swiftly.

For many families in affected areas, however, the immediate concern remains survival. Residents in several communities have already endured years of displacement, economic hardship, and recurring attacks.

Calls for Stronger Protection

The call by adds diplomatic pressure on Abuja to demonstrate stronger protection for civilians, especially those targeted because of their religious identity.

Security experts believe a combination of stronger intelligence operations, community protection initiatives, and regional cooperation will be necessary to counter the threat posed by extremist groups.

For now, the international community is closely watching how the Nigerian government responds to the reported ultimatum issued by .

Many hope decisive action will help prevent further violence and reassure communities that their safety and religious freedom remain protected under Nigerian law.
