The University of Jos has formally inducted more than 8,000 newly admitted students into its academic community for the 2025/2026 Academic Session, marking another milestone in the institution’s long-standing tradition of academic excellence.
The colourful matriculation ceremony held on Thursday, February 5, 2026, attracted university officials, parents, guardians, and other stakeholders, as the institution welcomed a fresh cohort of students drawn from across the country.
Admission Earned Through Rigorous Process — VC
Delivering the matriculation address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tanko Ishaya, congratulated the students on securing admission into what he described as one of Nigeria’s foremost universities.
He stressed that admission into the University of Jos was not by chance, but earned through a highly competitive and rigorous selection process coordinated through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
According to him, thousands of candidates met the prescribed benchmarks during the admission exercise, intensifying competition for limited slots across the university’s programmes.
“As registration concludes, we expect not fewer than 8,000 students to be fully registered across the various faculties and academic programmes of the University,” the Vice-Chancellor disclosed.
Assurance to Parents, Zero Tolerance for Misconduct
Professor Ishaya reassured parents and guardians of the university’s commitment to providing a safe, secure, and intellectually stimulating environment that fosters both academic excellence and character development.
He urged the matriculating students to justify the confidence reposed in them by remaining disciplined, focused, and committed to their studies, warning that the institution maintains zero tolerance for cultism, antisocial behaviour, and other acts capable of undermining its values.
Students were also advised to adhere strictly to the university’s dress code, security protocols, and responsible use of social media.
JAMB Registrar Represented at Ceremony
At the event, the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, was represented by the Director of Admissions, Mr Mohammed Ahmed Babaji, who conveyed the Board’s goodwill to the University of Jos and the newly admitted students.
He underscored the importance of strict compliance with admission and registration guidelines, noting that registration remains a critical requirement for validating admission.
The Vice-Chancellor reiterated this point, warning that failure to complete registration within stipulated timelines could result in forfeiture of admission. He cautioned students against patronising touts and scammers, advising them to seek clarification only from designated university officials.
ICT, Entrepreneurship, Sports Get Boost
Professor Ishaya highlighted ongoing investments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), library services, sports development, student unionism, and entrepreneurship.
He particularly encouraged students to take advantage of the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation to acquire practical skills that would make them self-reliant and employable after graduation.
He also noted improvements in sports infrastructure following the successful hosting of the 27th Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA), alongside sustained efforts to enhance accommodation, transportation, healthcare services, power supply, water availability, and campus security.
Describing the students’ choice of the University of Jos as a wise one, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed Management’s commitment to equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and character required for responsible citizenship and successful careers.
