Nigerian Troops Rescue Abducted Retired Colonel in Plateau After Bandits Demand ₦200 Million Ransom

By DAYO ADESULU

Nigerian troops have successfully rescued a retired senior military officer, Colonel Ajanaku, who was abducted by armed bandits in Plateau State, following a swift and intelligence-driven security operation that unfolded within hours of the incident.

The rescue operation, carried out by troops drawn from relevant military formations, came after the kidnappers demanded a ₦200 million ransom and threatened to kill the retired officer if security agencies continued pursuit. Despite the threat, troops pressed on with covert tactics that ultimately led to the colonel’s safe recovery.

How the Abduction Happened

SaharaReporters gathered that the retired colonel was kidnapped at about 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, January 5, 2026, when armed men stormed his residence in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attackers reportedly broke into his home located opposite the Salvation Army Church along Rukuba Road, causing panic in the neighbourhood before whisking the victim away to an unknown location. Residents said the operation was swift and coordinated, suggesting prior surveillance by the kidnappers.

Once the abduction was reported, security agencies moved quickly to prevent the suspects from escaping deep into forested areas.

Troops Launch Immediate Search-and-Rescue Operation

Following the distress alert, Nigerian Army troops were immediately mobilised from relevant sectors within Plateau State and adjoining areas. The soldiers began tracking the kidnappers along suspected escape routes, including the Wildlife Park corridor and surrounding bush paths.

According to security sources, the operation focused on caves, rocky terrains, and high grounds believed to be common hideouts for criminal gangs operating around Bassa LGA. Surveillance and ground patrols were intensified, while local intelligence networks were activated to gather real-time information.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama, who disclosed details of the operation, said troops acted with urgency to avoid a prolonged hostage situation.

Kidnappers Demand ₦200 Million, Issue Threats

As the search intensified, the abductors reportedly contacted the victim’s wife, demanding a ransom of ₦200 million for the colonel’s release. The criminals allegedly warned that any attempt to rescue him by force would result in his death.

Despite the threat, military authorities refused to halt the operation. Instead, they adopted a covert approach, scaling back visible troop movements while relying on intelligence, tracking, and targeted maneuvers.

This strategic shift, sources said, reduced the kidnappers’ alertness and limited their ability to relocate the hostage quickly.

Colonel Rescued Alive Within 17 Hours

The strategy paid off. At about 5:30 p.m. on the same day, troops successfully rescued Colonel Ajanaku at the outskirts of the Rafiki axis in Bassa Local Government Area.

The rescue reportedly occurred without any ransom payment. Although details of the final engagement remain classified, sources confirmed that the kidnappers fled upon sighting advancing troops, abandoning the victim in the process.

The retired officer was immediately evacuated to a military medical facility, where he is currently undergoing medical evaluation. Security officials say his condition is stable.

Medical Checks and Intelligence Debrief Begin

Military authorities disclosed that the rescued colonel will also be debriefed after medical clearance. His account of the abduction, movements, and interactions with the kidnappers is expected to provide valuable intelligence for follow-up operations.

According to sources, such debriefings often help security agencies identify criminal routes, logistics networks, and possible collaborators within communities.

Meanwhile, troops have continued combing surrounding forests and suspected hideouts as part of a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.

Renewed Security Concerns in Plateau State

The abduction has once again highlighted growing security challenges in Plateau State, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities where kidnapping for ransom has surged in recent years.

Residents of Bassa LGA expressed relief over the colonel’s rescue but also raised concerns about the ease with which armed men operate at night. Community leaders are calling for increased patrols, better intelligence-sharing, and improved surveillance along known criminal corridors.

Military authorities, however, reassured residents that operations remain ongoing and that efforts are being intensified to dismantle kidnapping networks in the area.

Army Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Citizens

The Nigerian Army has repeatedly stated its resolve to combat kidnapping, banditry, and other forms of violent crime across the country. Sunday’s successful rescue, carried out within hours of the abduction, underscores the military’s emphasis on rapid response and intelligence-led operations.

Security experts say such outcomes not only save lives but also discourage ransom-driven crimes by denying criminals financial rewards.

As operations continue in Plateau State, residents hope sustained military pressure will translate into long-term safety and stability.
