US Delegation Dumped Chinese-Issued Phones, Badges Over Cybersecurity Fears — Reports

Trump Escalates Tariffs on China

By DAYO ADESULU

Members of the United States delegation reportedly discarded Chinese-issued materials, including temporary phones and accreditation items, before departing China aboard Air Force One, according to multiple international media reports.

The development followed heightened cybersecurity precautions taken during President Donald Trump’s recent diplomatic engagement in China, where American officials allegedly avoided using personal electronic devices throughout the visit.

Reports circulating online claimed that the entire US delegation, including Trump, threw away all items received from Chinese authorities before boarding Air Force One. While several media outlets confirmed that security materials and temporary devices were discarded, there is no verified evidence showing Trump personally disposing of the items himself.

According to reports, the discarded materials included temporary “burner” phones, conference credentials, badges, disposable communication devices, and other accessories issued during the official visit.

US Officials Took Strict Cybersecurity Measures

International reports indicated that the American delegation adopted strict digital security protocols amid concerns over cyber surveillance and espionage risks.

Officials reportedly relied on temporary devices instead of their personal phones during the trip. In addition, personal electronics belonging to members of the delegation were said to have been stored inside Faraday bags aboard Air Force One.

Faraday bags are specially designed signal-blocking pouches used to shield electronic devices from external communication signals, tracking systems, and potential hacking attempts.

The precaution reportedly formed part of broader security measures routinely employed during high-level diplomatic visits involving countries viewed as cybersecurity concerns by Washington.

Reports Spark Global Reactions Online

The incident quickly generated reactions across social media platforms, with many users interpreting the move as a sign of growing mistrust between the United States and China.

Several commentators described the action as symbolic of worsening tensions between the world’s two largest economies, especially amid ongoing disputes over technology, trade, cybersecurity, and geopolitical influence.

However, fact-checks of viral posts showed that some online versions exaggerated the event by suggesting that American officials dramatically “trashed everything from China” in a public display of hostility.

Available reports instead suggest that the disposal primarily involved security-sensitive materials and temporary electronic devices commonly used during official foreign visits.

Growing US-China Cybersecurity Concerns

Cybersecurity tensions between Washington and Beijing have intensified in recent years, with both countries frequently accusing each other of cyber espionage and digital surveillance activities.

American intelligence agencies have repeatedly warned government officials against carrying sensitive personal devices into countries considered high-risk for cyber intrusions.

Security experts say burner phones and Faraday bags are standard protective tools often used by diplomats, intelligence personnel, and senior government officials during international travel.

Although neither the White House nor Chinese authorities immediately issued detailed public statements regarding the reported disposal of devices and badges, the incident has further fueled discussions surrounding digital security in international diplomacy.
