Suspected Food Poisoning in Anambra Claims Lives of Five Siblings

A devastating case of suspected food poisoning in Anambra State has led to the deaths of five siblings and left their mother battling for her life in the hospital. The incident, which occurred in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, has plunged the local community into deep mourning. The tragedy unfolded on Saturday, May 3, after the children reportedly consumed a home-cooked meal. Their 79-year-old father, Pa Robinson Aghalu, a retired soldier, shared the heartbreaking account with journalists during a visit to the grieving household.

Father Recounts Heart-Wrenching Incident

Pa Aghalu narrated that shortly after eating the suspected food poisoning meal prepared by their mother, the children began complaining of severe stomach aches. This was quickly followed by vomiting and other distressing symptoms. According to him, efforts to save the children were made immediately. The victims were rushed to several health facilities, including a local maternity clinic, Iyienu Mission Hospital, and Crown Hospital. Unfortunately, five of the six children succumbed to the suspected poisoning at different medical centres.

Only One Child Survived — Was Not at Home

Amid the suspected food poisoning tragedy, one child survived—simply because he was not at home at the time of the incident. The surviving child had reportedly travelled to study with a relative and thus escaped the deadly meal. The mother, however, was not so fortunate. After also consuming the same food, she began exhibiting similar symptoms and was hospitalised in critical condition. Her health status remains uncertain, although she is receiving ongoing medical care.

Police Begin Investigation, Food Samples Collected for Forensic Analysis

In response to the growing public concern of the suspected food poisoning, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident and disclosed that an investigation is underway. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that officers have taken over the scene of the tragedy. He confirmed that food samples were collected for forensic analysis to determine the exact cause of the poisoning. Ikenga said, “The command is aware of this development and has taken over the crime scene. The samples of food have been taken for forensic assessment, and operatives are also engaging the neighbourhood for necessary information that will aid the investigations.”

Bodies Deposited in Morgue as Forensic Results Awaited

According to the police, the bodies of the deceased children have been taken to a local morgue. Authorities assured the public that updates will be provided as soon as more information becomes available from the forensic team. While awaiting official confirmation of the cause, many in the community believe contaminated food or toxic substances could have led to the children’s untimely deaths. However, they also urge the public not to jump to conclusions until the results are released.

A Growing Concern: Food Safety and Public Health in Nigeria

This tragic incident has reignited public discourse around food safety in Nigeria, especially in rural and semi-urban communities. Health experts have consistently warned about the dangers of improper food handling, poor storage, and lack of access to food safety education. There is now renewed pressure on local and federal health agencies to intensify public awareness campaigns on food hygiene and poisoning prevention.

Conclusion: Demand for Justice and Preventive Measures

As the investigation into the suspected food poisoning in Anambra continues, grieving community members and civil society groups are calling for justice and preventive strategies.
