In a significant development, the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has announced the discontinuation of criminal charges against Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of Fidelity Bank Plc. This decision has sparked various reactions from the public and stakeholders within the banking sector.
The Attorney General, who holds the constitutional authority to enter a nolle prosequi, emphasized that this action reflects a commitment to justice and fairness. The decision was made after a thorough review indicated that Dr. Onyeali-Ikpe was not connected to the charges, as she was neither the account officer nor the MD/CEO of Fidelity Bank at the time the account linked to the alleged fraud was opened.
“The Attorney General’s decision is guided by the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law,” stated Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Assistant to the President on Communication Publicity. “We believe this action serves the best interest of justice and the public.”
However, it is important to note that this decision does not absolve Fidelity Bank from the ongoing allegations related to the case, which remains pending in court. The Attorney General reiterated the office’s commitment to ensuring that justice is served and that all parties found culpable will face the full extent of the law.
The AGF urged the public to allow the legal process to unfold without speculation or premature conclusions. “We will ensure that the best interests of justice are upheld at all times, and that those who are found wanting are held accountable,” Ogundele added.
As this case progresses, the Office of the Attorney General remains dedicated to transparency and fairness in the judicial process, aiming to serve as a deterrent to others in the industry.
