Babcock University has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the vision of its founders while strengthening academic excellence, spiritual development, research, innovation and global relevance.
The President/Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Afolarin Olutunde Ojewole, made the commitment while speaking at the opening of the Adventist College of West Africa (ACWA)/Adventist Seminary of West Africa (ASWA) Reunion.
Professor Ojewole, who was represented at the event by the Vice President, Advancement and Development, Dr. Olaniyi Arije, said the institution would continue to advance the principles and ideas that inspired its establishment.
According to him, Babcock University remains focused on developing an institution that combines academic excellence with spiritual growth and meaningful contributions to society.
“Babcock University will continue to advance the ideas that inspire its founders and remain committed to academic excellence, spiritual development, research, innovation, entrepreneurship and global relevance.”
Reunion Offers Opportunity to Renew Shared Values
The Vice Chancellor described the ACWA/ASWA Reunion as more than an opportunity for former students to meet and celebrate their past.
He said the gathering provided a platform for alumni to reconnect, strengthen relationships and renew their commitment to the values that have united members across generations.
“The event offers an opportunity to strengthen old bonds, create new connections and renew our collective commitment to the values that have united us across generations,” he said.
Professor Ojewole added that the conversations, memories and fellowship generated during the reunion would help alumni develop a deeper appreciation of the university’s journey and its achievements over the years.
“I envision that the conversations we will share, the memories we will relive, and the fellowship we will enjoy will deepen our appreciation for the journey we have made so far,” he added.
Don Urges Alumni to Embrace Strategic Financial Management
The reunion also featured a paper by Professor Godwin Oyedokun, a Professor of Accounting at Lead City University.
Speaking on “Strategic Financial Management: Advancing Sustainable Growth Through Alumni-Alma Mater,” Professor Oyedokun said strategic financial management should not be viewed as an issue reserved for corporate organisations.
He explained that the principle was equally important to alumni associations and individuals seeking sustainable financial growth.
The accounting scholar urged alumni to become more deliberate and disciplined in managing their income and expenditure.
“You have to be wise enough and strategic about how your income is spent if you are to realise any positive net effect of it,” he said, stressing the importance of sound financial decisions.
He further challenged universities and alumni associations to adopt strategic approaches to project management, tuition and other financial responsibilities.
Alumni Described as Strategic Assets
Professor Oyedokun also emphasised the importance of maintaining strong relationships between alumni and their alma mater.
He called for programmes capable of bringing alumni from different generations together, describing university alumni as among the greatest strategic assets of their institutions.
He also referred to alumni as “co-creators of the university,” urging them to take an active interest in the development and policies of their alma mater.
According to him, alumni should advocate academic excellence by speaking up and encouraging greater inclusion in institutional affairs and policy decisions.
Reunion Chairman Calls for Stronger Alumni Network
The Chairman of the Babcock University Alumni Association, ACWA/ASWA 1975–2002 Sets, Dr. Abimbola Fagbe, said the reunion was not simply about reconnecting with old friends or celebrating a shared history.
She said it was also an opportunity for alumni to reaffirm their commitment to the future development of their alma mater.
Dr. Fagbe urged members to strengthen their relationships, reach out to one another and encourage greater participation in alumni activities.
She also called for the building of a vibrant alumni network that would remain valuable to future generations.
Why This Matters
The ACWA/ASWA Reunion highlights the continuing relationship between Babcock University and generations of former students who have passed through its educational system.
Beyond celebrating history, the gathering underscored the role alumni can play in supporting institutional development, promoting academic excellence and contributing strategically to the future of their alma mater.
The reunion brought together former students to celebrate their shared heritage while reflecting on Babcock University’s role in developing leaders committed to character, service and positive societal impact.
