BY DAYO ADESULU

LAGOS, NIGERIA – During a recent National Youth Symposium held in Lagos, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat delivered an uplifting message to Nigerian youth, asserting that claims of a bleak future are unfounded. He emphasized optimism and self-reliance as essential components for the youth to thrive amid the country’s challenges.

#### Celebrating Youth Resilience

The symposium, themed “Nigeria: Guiding the Youth on the Path to Self-Reliance,” coincided with Hamzat’s 60th birthday celebration. He assured young Nigerians that, despite socio-economic difficulties, there is hope and potential for success. “I am upbeat and optimistic about this country because of our youth,” he said, highlighting their achievements in various fields, including science, medicine, and music.

#### Embracing Opportunities for Self-Reliance

Hamzat encouraged the youth to capitalize on available opportunities to enhance their self-reliance. He noted the transformative power of the internet, which has opened up global avenues for young Nigerians to excel. “We must engage and encourage our youth. These are pivotal moments in Nigeria,” he stated, urging them to manage their time and resources effectively.

#### Addressing Socio-Economic Challenges

While acknowledging the existing socio-economic and security challenges, Hamzat pointed out that foreign investments in Nigeria indicate a belief in the country’s potential. “Our problems are surmountable, and there are opportunities,” he remarked, challenging the youth to recognize the prospects that outsiders see in Nigeria.

#### Expert Insights on Resourcefulness

Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun, former Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, echoed Hamzat’s sentiments, urging youth to focus on their resourcefulness and resilience. He emphasized the importance of self-reliance and learning to navigate the system without dependency on external factors. “The government should remove obstacles that prevent youths from accessing resources,” he added, advocating for equitable access.

#### Empowering Agricultural Opportunities

Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, discussed the challenges of land access for agricultural purposes and outlined initiatives to empower youth in the sector. She highlighted the state’s commitment to developing organized markets and providing support for young farmers. “We need to push for those who have agricultural qualifications,” she stated.

#### Emphasizing IT Skills and Mentorship

Information Technology expert Dr. Stanley Muoneke called on the youth to acquire various IT skills and seek mentorship. He emphasized the importance of self-assessment and networking to build relevant skills. “They must learn communication and teamwork,” he advised, encouraging the production of IT solutions to address local challenges.

#### Encouraging Investment in Self

Entrepreneur Dr. Funmilola Tella urged youth to invest in themselves and their ventures, while Dr. Rabiu Olowo, Executive Secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, highlighted the necessity of seizing opportunities within the economy rather than complaining about it.

#### Building Confidence and Voice

Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, reinforced the message of self-belief among youth, emphasizing the importance of resilience in overcoming opposition. He assured that the ministry is actively engaging stakeholders to ensure that the voices of Lagos youth are heard and their ideas implemented.

The National Youth Symposium organized by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat served as a powerful platform to inspire Nigerian youth to embrace their potential and take proactive steps toward self-reliance. With the right mindset and access to opportunities, the youth can navigate the challenges they face and contribute positively to Nigeria’s future.
