Election Petition Tribunal Fixes Judgement Day For Kalu

UMUAHIA – The National and State Assembly Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, Abia State capital, has fixed September 9, 2019 to deliver judgment on whether or not Orji Uzo Kalu will be Senator or not.

The petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa is challenging the declaration of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as winner of the Abia North senatorial seat.

Chairman of the Election Petition Tribunal, Justice Cornelius Efuntayo, made the date public after counsel to all the parties in the petition had adopted their written before the tribunal.

Counsel to the petitioner, Den Wigwe, in his submission said the Electoral Act, remained the major flank within which the tribunal, then called on the tribunal to determine the petition in favour of the petitioner.

In his submission, counsel to the defendant, O.A. Obiawunna (SAN), called on the tribunal to strike out the petition on the grounds that it lacked merit.

However, counsels to APC, Perfect Okore, and counsel to INEC, Adesuwa C. Okoroafor, both called on the tribunal to dismiss the petition for lack of merit.
