Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of this year’s Workers’ Day celebration, recognizing the vital contributions of Nigerian workers to national development. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government.
The declaration came through a statement issued on Tuesday night by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, and was aimed at acknowledging the critical role of workers in the growth and stability of Nigeria’s economy and democratic governance.
Workers’ Day Public Holiday Aimed at Promoting Peace and Industrialisation
According to the Minister, peace and stability are necessary preconditions for economic growth and industrialisation, goals that form a cornerstone of the Renewed Hope Agenda championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“There is dignity in labour,” Tunji-Ojo noted, emphasizing the need for Nigerians to embrace hard work, innovation, and dedication in their various professions.

Minister Tunji-Ojo lauded Nigerian workers for their commitment in the face of economic and social challenges, stating that their resilience has contributed significantly to the greatness Nigeria commands in the comity of nations.
“The commitment to the work we do as a people is central to nation-building,” the minister stated. “We must continue to raise the bar in our respective trades, as our combined efforts directly impact the quality of governance and the benefits derived by all Nigerians.”
The minister reiterated that the administration’s vision for a prosperous Nigeria is anchored on the productivity and creativity of its workforce, urging workers to pursue innovation and excellence.
