The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it carried out a series of airstrikes on Hezbollah positions across southern Lebanon over the past 24 hours following a deadly explosion that claimed the lives of two Israeli reserve soldiers and seriously wounded four others.
The military also disclosed that its forces launched a security operation near Jenin in the West Bank after two Israeli civilians were attacked by Palestinian assailants.
IDF Targets Hezbollah Infrastructure in Southern Lebanon
According to the IDF, the latest strikes were launched in response to Wednesday’s explosion in the Majdal Zoun area of southern Lebanon, where Major (Res.) Harel Birenstock and Sergeant Major (Res.) Tamir Vaknin were killed during military operations.
Four additional Israeli soldiers sustained severe injuries in the blast and were evacuated for medical treatment.
The IDF said its air campaign targeted multiple Hezbollah facilities, including:
Weapon storage sites
A Hezbollah command center
Additional terrorist infrastructure across southern Lebanon
The military said the operation was aimed at degrading Hezbollah’s operational capabilities and preventing future attacks against Israeli forces.
Israeli Troops to Remain in Southern Lebanon Security Zone
The IDF reaffirmed that its troops remain deployed inside the designated security zone in southern Lebanon in accordance with existing security arrangements.
Military officials stated that Israeli forces will continue conducting operations to eliminate threats posed by Hezbollah and safeguard both Israeli civilians and deployed soldiers.
The latest strikes underscore the continued volatility along the Israel-Lebanon border despite ongoing efforts to maintain the ceasefire.
Israeli Civilians Attacked Near Jenin
In a separate development on Thursday, the IDF reported that two Israeli civilians mistakenly entered the Jenin area in the northern West Bank.
According to the military, Palestinian attackers hurled a brick at their vehicle, damaging it. The occupants were not injured.
The civilians later reached Israeli forces safely at the Gilboa Crossing.
Security Sweep Leads to Arrests
Following the incident, Israeli troops launched searches around Jenin and apprehended several wanted individuals.
The IDF did not immediately disclose whether those arrested were directly connected to the attack on the civilians but said security operations in the area were ongoing.
The incident highlights the continuing security challenges in the West Bank, where Israeli forces frequently conduct raids targeting suspected militant activities.
Why This Matters
The latest Israeli strikes against Hezbollah and the security operation in Jenin reflect the multiple security fronts confronting Israel simultaneously. As tensions remain high along both the Lebanese border and the West Bank, military actions on either front carry the potential to trigger wider regional escalation.
Conclusion
Israel’s military has intensified operations against Hezbollah following the deaths of two reserve soldiers in southern Lebanon while also responding to a separate security incident involving Israeli civilians near Jenin. The developments come amid persistent instability across the region, with the IDF maintaining that it will continue operations aimed at protecting Israeli citizens and its forces.
