Mohammed Badaru Reverses Stance On Security Summit

Mohammed Badaru

By MOHAMMED DANBABA

In a significant policy shift, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has reversed his earlier position and declared full support for the forthcoming National Security Summit being organised by the National Assembly.

The two-day summit aims to provide practical solutions to Nigeria’s escalating security challenges. Initially skeptical of the idea, Badaru now describes the summit as a “timely initiative” and promises full engagement to ensure its success.

Badaru Commits to Translating Summit Outcomes into Action

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Sunday, Mohammed Badaru highlighted the importance of dialogue and inclusive policymaking. According to him, discussions must be converted into strategic security reforms if real change is to happen.

“When you hold a summit, you hear people speak, gather perspectives, and take those insights back to review and strengthen our strategy. That’s how change happens,” Badaru said.

Mohammed Badaru pledged to actively participate in the summit and ensure that every recommendation would be implemented effectively by his ministry.

Earlier Rejection of the Summit Sparks Senate Rebuke

Just days earlier, during an inter-ministerial briefing, Mohammed Badaru had dismissed the relevance of a national summit. At the time, he argued that crafting a more robust security strategy was preferable to holding conferences.

His remarks did not sit well with lawmakers. On Thursday, the Senate strongly criticised the minister’s comments, warning him against making statements that could cause friction between the executive and legislative arms of government.

The Upper Chamber reminded the Defence Minister that collaboration, not division, was critical to solving Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

Change of Heart Driven by Need for Inclusive Policymaking

While explaining his change in tone, Mohammed Badaru acknowledged the efforts of the National Assembly in creating a platform for national dialogue on security. He admitted that summits such as this can inform policy reforms by collecting viewpoints from all sectors of society.

“I will participate in the National Assembly Security Summit and ensure that whatever outcomes from the summit are translated into action and lead to tangible results. It is a commendable move towards inclusive policy-making,” he stated.

This updated position reflects a growing consensus that inclusive governance and multi-stakeholder engagement are vital in overcoming national threats, from terrorism to banditry and communal violence.

Disagreement over Military Readiness

Another point of controversy between Mohammed Badaru and the House of Representatives was the assertion that insurgents wield more sophisticated weapons than the Nigerian Armed Forces. Badaru publicly disputed this claim, further intensifying tensions between both arms of government.

However, Sunday’s statements suggest that the minister now recognises the value of dialogue over confrontation. His promise to support the National Security Summit signals a renewed commitment to collaborative governance and transparent defence leadership.

Summit Expected to Address Core Security Threats

The National Security Summit, championed by the National Assembly, is expected to bring together security experts, civil society leaders, and representatives from various arms of government. Topics on the agenda include:

  • Strategies to curb terrorism and insurgency
  • Enhancing inter-agency intelligence sharing
  • Community engagement in conflict prevention
  • Funding and modernization of the Armed Forces

Observers believe the summit could mark a turning point in the country’s approach to national security—especially with full buy-in from the Defence Ministry.

Conclusion: Bridging the Gap Between Policy and Implementation

Mohammed Badaru’s reversal may be seen as a political correction, but it also sends a powerful message. In today’s volatile security climate, unity of purpose is essential. By embracing the National Security Summit, the Defence Minister has reaffirmed the federal government’s willingness to adopt inclusive, actionable solutions.

If the summit yields real reforms and implements tangible recommendations, it could be a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle for peace and stability.
