Mojisola Meranda has formally taken up her role as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking a new chapter in the Assembly’s leadership.
Meranda was escorted to her new office by lawmakers, with the notable exception of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was recently removed from office.
Lawmakers Show Support for New Speaker
After a ceremonial procession to her office, Meranda and her colleagues posed for photographs, symbolizing unity and support for her tenure.
In high spirits, the lawmakers rallied behind her leadership with chants of encouragement:
- “Madam, continue your work; your work is appealing to us. You are the Speaker, you are the Speaker, you are the Speaker.”
- “Speak for Lagos. Continue with your work.”
Once in her office, prayers were offered for her success as she settled into her new role.
Tensions Following Leadership Transition
The development follows claims by former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa that his removal was unconstitutional and failed to adhere to due process.
Enhanced Security Measures at the Assembly
To ensure a peaceful plenary session, security has been heightened at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
In a notice signed by Omotayo Adekemi, on behalf of Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun, staff members and aides were reminded:
- “All staff members and legislative aides must present valid identity cards to access the House premises. Entry will be denied anyone without a valid ID card.”
Additionally, the Lagos State Police Command has committed to maintaining peace across the state. Commissioner of Police Ishola Olawale stated:
- “While the police have no business inside the Assembly, it is our duty to ensure calmness outside the premises and across the state.”
