NAF Jet Crashes in Borgu: Initial Reports Suggest Pilots Survived

By MOHAMMED DANBABA

A tense calm has settled over Karabonde in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State after a military jet belonging to the Nigerian Air Force reportedly went down on Saturday evening. The Niger State military jet crash, which stirred panic across surrounding communities, was first confirmed by Lapai TV, a local digital news platform, through an update shared on its verified Facebook page.

According to the station, the aircraft—an Alpha Jet on an operational assignment—crashed close to Karabonde village. Although full details are still unfolding, early reports indicate that both pilots survived the crash and managed to eject from the aircraft before impact. Their condition is yet to be officially confirmed.

Local Sources Describe Moments Before the Crash

Residents who spoke with local journalists said they heard a loud sound moments before the jet went down. Some villagers rushed toward the scene, hoping to assist, while others fled in fear, worried it might be linked to ongoing anti-banditry operations in parts of Niger State.

Although the situation created a brief moment of anxiety, eyewitnesses reported spotting parachutes in the sky, suggesting that the pilots ejected safely.

Air Force Yet to Release Official Statement

As at Saturday night, the Nigerian Air Force had not issued any public statement regarding the Niger State military jet crash. Attempts to reach NAF’s Director of Public Relations were unsuccessful, but military sources hinted that a preliminary investigation team had already been dispatched to the crash zone.

Security analysts say the Air Force usually follows strict protocols for verifying incidents involving aircraft. Because of the sensitivity of such operations—especially in conflict zones—official confirmation often comes after internal cross-checks with field commanders and aviation teams.

Possible Cause of the Crash Still Unknown

While speculation has begun spreading online, experts caution against drawing conclusions. The Alpha Jet, widely used in close air support missions, has performed numerous operations over Niger, Kaduna, Zamfara, and the North-East.

Although mechanical issues remain a possible cause, security analysts say terrain, weather, or operational intensity could also play a role. In recent years, Nigeria has recorded a few aircraft incidents linked to counterterrorism operations, forcing conversations around fleet maintenance and pilot workload.

Military Launches Search-and-Assess Mission

Security sources familiar with early assessments confirmed that a search-and-assess team, including special forces and technical investigators, has reached the crash area. Their task is to secure the site, recover sensitive components, assess damage, and extract the pilots if needed.

Community volunteers and local hunters also assisted security personnel by helping guide them through bush paths leading toward the wreckage.

Niger State Authorities Call for Calm

Officials in Borgu LGA have urged residents to remain calm while the military handles the situation. The crash site has reportedly been cordoned off to prevent interference with the ongoing investigation.

Local authorities expressed relief that the pilots reportedly survived, noting that their rescue will strengthen public confidence in emergency response systems.

Social Media Reacts to the Crash

Since the incident became public, Nigerians have taken to social media to express concern, demand transparency, and pray for the safety of the surviving pilots. While many praised the bravery of Air Force personnel operating in high-risk environments, others renewed calls for the federal government to upgrade Nigeria’s military aviation assets.

Defence analysts say the crash—if confirmed by NAF—may once again spark debate over aircraft procurement, especially as the country intensifies its fight against banditry and terrorism.

More Updates Expected as Investigation Progresses

As the Nigerian Air Force completes its verification process, a formal statement is expected to clarify the mission the jet was undertaking, the condition of the pilots, and the steps being taken to prevent future incidents.

For now, the Niger State military jet crash remains a developing story. Nigerians await full details from military headquarters in Abuja.
