By DAYO ADESULU

The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade earlier scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information & Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

FG Confirms Cancellation of Parade

According to the statement, the government regrets the cancellation but assured citizens that the move will not diminish the significance of the milestone anniversary.

Imohiosen said:

“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, previously scheduled to mark the 65th Independence on Wednesday, 1st October.

The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm.”

Other Programmes Remain in Place

Despite the cancellation of the ceremonial parade, all other activities lined up for the celebration tagged “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation” will go ahead as planned.

The Federal Government also reassured Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests that the anniversary will still be celebrated with due recognition of the country’s journey since independence.

FG Appeals for Support

Imohiosen further appealed for patience and support, urging Nigerians to rally behind the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The Federal Government appreciates the understanding, support and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests, and urges Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in making Nigeria a greater nation,” the statement read.

Background

The Independence Day parade, often marked with military displays, cultural presentations, and appearances by top government officials, has long been one of the signature events of Nigeria’s October 1 celebrations.

Earlier, the Federal Government declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of the 65th Independence Anniversary.

This year’s commemoration will now focus on other scheduled events, excluding the parade.
