Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Migrants’ Rights, Assumes Leadership in Euro-African Dialogue

By DAYO ADESULU

The Federal Government has pledged its dedication to protecting Nigerians abroad and promoting safe migration practices as the nation prepares to lead the Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development in 2025.

Alhaji Tijani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), announced this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja. The event preceded the National Migration Dialogue scheduled for December 9.

National Migration Dialogue: A Platform for Change

This year’s dialogue, themed “Beyond Borders: Celebrating Migrants’ Legacy, Protecting Their Rights,” underscores the critical role migrants play in the socio-economic growth of both Nigeria and their host countries.

Ahmed highlighted the government’s goal to protect migrants’ rights, ensuring they live and work with dignity while contributing meaningfully to their communities.

“The dialogue serves as a platform to address challenges of irregular migration and promote regular migration pathways. It aims to safeguard migrants’ rights, provide access to decent work, ensure accurate information, and facilitate safe and dignified migration,” he said.

Nigeria’s Role in the Rabat Process

Nigeria’s upcoming leadership in the Euro-African Dialogue on Migration and Development, also known as the Rabat Process, marks a significant milestone. Ahmed emphasized that this role will enable Nigeria to:

  • Foster international knowledge sharing.
  • Advance technological collaborations.
  • Enhance remittance inflows and investments.

“This leadership position provides opportunities for Nigeria to set the agenda on migration policies, prioritizing safety, dignity, and economic growth,” Ahmed stated.

Migration’s Broader Impacts

The commissioner urged Nigerians to reflect on migration’s transformative effects on individuals, families, and communities. He reiterated the importance of government initiatives designed to promote orderly and safe migration while mitigating the risks associated with irregular migration.

Call to Action

Ahmed expressed gratitude to the media for their role in raising awareness about migration’s benefits. He encouraged continued collaboration to promote the message of safe and structured migration pathways.

“We must recognize the invaluable contributions of migrants and amplify the need for protecting their rights wherever they are,” he concluded.
