The newly elected Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects (NIMENA), Eferebo Sylvanus, has emphasized Nigeria’s maritime sector’s untapped potential to generate over $40 billion annually. Sylvanus attributed the sector’s current underperformance to poor regulatory standards and weak enforcement mechanisms, leading to significant revenue losses.
Key Challenges and Plans for Transformation
Sylvanus made these remarks after his election at the Extraordinary General Meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as detailed in a statement by the institution on Monday.
He highlighted:
- The urgent need for effective regulation and enforcement to optimize revenue generation.
- Plans to reposition NIMENA as a critical player in the sector’s transformation.
- The establishment of a journal house for publishing research and development activities aimed at addressing Nigeria’s maritime challenges.
Collaboration and Priorities
Sylvanus expressed the institution’s readiness to work closely with regulatory agencies, policymakers, and stakeholders to strengthen the sector’s framework. His vision includes:
- Achieving international recognition for NIMENA.
- Encouraging research and innovation to resolve challenges in Nigeria and the sub-region.
- Raising awareness of maritime safety and standards through public enlightenment campaigns.
Support from Outgoing Leadership
Outgoing NIMENA Chairman, Daniel Tamunodukobipi, commended the transparent election process and urged the new leadership to:
- Build on existing initiatives to ensure safer waterways.
- Partner with government agencies to enhance codes and standards for safety.
