Mohammed Uwais’ Judicial Legacy Hailed

By MOHAMMED DANBABA

Mohammed Uwais: The Chairman of the Northern States Governorsโ€™ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Mohammed Uwais. The respected jurist died on Friday at the age of 89.

In a condolence message issued on behalf of the 19 northern governors, Governor Yahaya praised Justice Uwais as a beacon of integrity, legal brilliance, and judicial reform. The statement, signed by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Government House Gombe, Ismaila Uba Misilli, described his passing as the end of an era in Nigeriaโ€™s legal and democratic history.

โ€œThe death of Justice Mohammed Uwais marks the end of an illustrious era in Nigeriaโ€™s legal history. He was not only a legal icon but also a symbol of judicial excellence and ethical leadership,โ€ Yahaya said.

A Judicial Titan Who Reshaped the Legal Landscape

Justice Mohammed Uwais served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006. During this period, he championed judicial independence, issued landmark rulings, and fiercely protected the sanctity of the judiciary.

His tenure on the Supreme Court bench was widely regarded as a turning point for judicial credibility and professional conduct. Many of his judgments are still referenced today in legal discourse and jurisprudential development across Nigeria.

Pioneer of Electoral Reform in Nigeria

Following his retirement in 2006, Uwais continued to serve the nation. In 2007, the late President Umaru Musa Yarโ€™Adua appointed him as the chairman of the Electoral Reform Committee. This committee was tasked with overhauling Nigeriaโ€™s flawed electoral system.

The committee’s 2008 report introduced revolutionary recommendations, including the unbundling of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the establishment of electoral offences tribunals. These proposals laid the groundwork for many ongoing electoral reforms in Nigeria.

Governor Yahaya highlighted this legacy, saying:

โ€œJustice Uwaisโ€™ legacy will continue to inspire generations of legal minds and public servants. Nigeria has indeed lost a towering figure in its quest for justice and democracy.โ€

Tributes and Condolences Across Nigeria

Governor Yahaya extended heartfelt condolences to the Uwais family, the people and government of Kaduna Stateโ€”where the late CJN hailed fromโ€”the Nigerian judiciary, and the entire nation. He prayed for the repose of Uwaisโ€™ soul and for comfort for those he left behind.

โ€œWe pray Almighty Allah to grant him Aljannat Firdaus and give his family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.โ€

Justice Mohammed Uwais is remembered not only for his legal acumen but also for his unwavering stance on justice, fairness, and democratic ideals. His influence remains visible in Nigeriaโ€™s ongoing legal reforms and in the conduct of judicial officers across the country.

An Enduring Legacy

Justice Uwais’ death comes at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with judicial integrity, electoral credibility, and institutional reforms. His legacy serves as a reminder of what ethical leadership and unrelenting dedication to national service can achieve.

While Nigeria mourns this monumental loss, legal scholars and policymakers alike are being called to uphold and advance the standards that Uwais exemplified throughout his career.
