Omoyele Sowore on Political Coalitions: “They Are Self-Serving Vehicles for the Next Set of Thieves”

Sowore Dismisses Political Realignments Ahead of 2027 Elections

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, has strongly criticized the growing wave of political realignments and coalition talks ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. In a bold statement, Sowore described these efforts as “hollow and self-serving,” arguing that they are often used by the elite to regain access to public funds under new banners.

Speaking during an exclusive interview on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM Ilese-Ijebu, Sowore called out Nigeria’s political elite for using coalition politics as a smokescreen. “Political coalitions in Nigeria are nothing but vehicles created to carry the next set of thieves to win the national treasury,” he declared.

Critique of Political Rascals and Misguided Labels

Reacting to the frequent criticism directed at his Revolution Now movement, Sowore dismissed the term “political rascality” often used to label his activism. “We are not rascals. Political rascals are those who carry out assassinations and engage in deplorable acts,” he said. According to him, the political elite only use such terms when they feel threatened by genuine reformers.

He stated, “Referring to people trying to fix this country as rascals is just a misguided thought.”

Coalition Calls Are Hypocritical, Says Sowore

Sowore noted that many of the political actors now championing coalition movements ahead of 2027 are the same individuals who sabotaged such efforts during the 2023 general elections. “Political parties are supposed to unite like-minded people. Ironically, those now calling for coalition are the same ones who rejected it during the last election. They’ve weakened themselves,” he stated.

He emphasized that the real coalition Nigeria needs is not among politicians, but among the oppressed and marginalized citizens who have suffered decades of bad governance.

Time to Dismantle the System and Reject Recycled Leaders

Taking his criticism further, Sowore called for a complete break from Nigeria’s entrenched political order. He urged citizens to reject the political system that continually recycles corrupt leaders and prevents real change.

“When we want to break an old system, we need to jettison the pipeline that supplies the rotten ones in the system. Nigerians have to take a collective decision about these old recycled rotten politicians,” he stated, adding that true reform requires cutting off the supply chain of failed leadership.

Sowore Demands Electoral Reform and Use of Technology

Sowore also turned his attention to Nigeria’s electoral process, describing the voter card system as a major obstacle to citizen participation. “The biggest burden imposed on citizens is the voter’s card, which has to be renewed every four years,” he argued.

He advocated for the use of existing national identity documents such as the national ID card, international passport, or driver’s license in the voting process. He also called for the introduction of electronic voting to make elections more accessible and less prone to manipulation.

“People vote on BBNaija from the comfort of their homes and we have not heard of rigging. Why are we not employing technology yet?” he questioned.

Excess Voter Cards a Waste of National Resources

Sowore criticized the excessive printing of voter cards, describing it as an unnecessary drain on the national treasury. He claimed that undistributed voter cards are often used in election rigging, and that many Nigerians no longer see the need for the card once elections are over.

“The voter card has become a document used to verify identity in banks and other institutions, not even for voting,” he observed. “Why waste public funds printing plastic cards that are no longer serving their primary purpose?”

A Call for National Awakening and Genuine Reforms

Omoyele Sowore’s remarks are a rallying cry to Nigerians, particularly the youth and the disenfranchised, to take back their country from the elite who recycle themselves in power under different banners. His call to action involves dismantling old structures, demanding electoral transparency, and forming a people-powered coalition for genuine change.

As the political landscape continues to shift ahead of 2027, Sowore remains steadfast in his message: “Only the people, united in purpose, can rescue Nigeria from systemic failure.”
