A Spiritual General Bows Out
Nigeria’s Christian community is in mourning following the passing of one of its most revered evangelists, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, founder and president of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA). The fiery preacher, known for his healing crusades and decades of impactful ministry, died at the age of 80.
According to a statement released by his family on October 13, 2025, the evangelist peacefully departed this world on October 6, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. The announcement described his transition as a “glorious home call” after a lifetime of faithful service to God and humanity.
Born in 1945 in Asaga, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, Rev. Uma Ukpai was a man whose spiritual footprint extended far beyond Nigeria. His message of salvation, faith, and national unity resonated deeply with millions who attended his crusades across Africa and other parts of the world.

A Ministry Rooted in Faith and Service
Rev. Ukpai founded the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association in the 1970s, a ministry that grew into one of Nigeria’s most recognized Christian evangelistic platforms. Over the years, he became widely respected for his miracle crusades, faith teachings, and humanitarian works.
He consistently preached repentance, forgiveness, and faith in Christ, often saying, “When faith takes over, failure gives up.” His healing and prophetic ministry drew large crowds, with testimonies of transformation and deliverance that strengthened the faith of many believers.
Under his leadership, the UUEA established mission schools, training centres, and support programmes for widows and the less privileged. His annual crusades in Uyo and Aba became landmark gatherings for Christian revival, unity, and empowerment.

Beyond the pulpit, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai was a patriot who believed that Nigeria’s unity must be built on moral rebirth and spiritual renewal. He often urged political leaders to rule with integrity and Godly wisdom, arguing that “no nation can rise above the character of its people.”
His ministry’s motto, “Jesus is Lord,” symbolized his lifelong dedication to lifting Christ above personal fame. Despite his growing influence, he remained humble, approachable, and deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of pastors and evangelists.
Ukpai’s messages were broadcast on radio and television across Africa, reaching millions of homes. Through these platforms, he became not only a preacher but a teacher of hope during national trials and uncertainty.

In his tribute, Rev. Dr. William Okoye, former Aso Rock chaplain, said, “Dr. Uma Ukpai was one of the few remaining fathers of faith who stood firm when preaching the gospel was not fashionable. His life reminds us that true greatness comes from service.”
