On November 21, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu of the Federal Republic of Nigeria addressed the graduating class at the 36th convocation ceremony of Yaba College of Technology, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, embracing challenges, and striving for excellence in all endeavors. His message was delivered by Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, at the Dr. Philip Adegbite Sports Complex.
President Tinubu encouraged the graduates to view their education as an ongoing journey. He highlighted that the world is abundant with opportunities, and the knowledge and skills acquired at Yaba College of Technology should serve as a guiding light for positive contributions to society. He urged the graduates to utilize their expertise not only for personal advancement but also for national growth and innovation.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to enhancing the education sector through the Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on providing the necessary funding and infrastructural support for tertiary institutions. He mentioned the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as a financial resource for students, alongside ongoing initiatives like the Tetfund and Needs Assessment Programs.
Acknowledging the achievements of Yaba College of Technology students in various fields, including academics, sports, arts, and community service, President Tinubu encouraged the graduates to remain courageous and committed to their dreams. He reminded them to uphold their integrity and avoid activities that could harm their reputation or that of Nigeria.
In his welcome address, Prof. Funso Isolaowa Afolabi, Chairman of the Governing Council, expressed gratitude to the President and the Minister of Education for their presence. He congratulated the graduates, emphasizing that education is a lifelong pursuit and urging them to embrace curiosity and innovation as they step into the future.
Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, the Rector of Yaba College of Technology, reinforced the importance of resilience and vision in achieving success. He reminded graduates that adaptability and collaboration are essential in the rapidly changing 21st-century landscape. The Rector also celebrated the institution’s 77-year legacy of excellence and its consistent ranking as the best polytechnic in Nigeria for six consecutive years.
A total of 8,139 graduates completed their studies, with 316 achieving Distinction, 2,381 graduating with Upper Class honors, 3,939 receiving Lower Credit, and 1,503 earning Pass grades. During the ceremony, two notable individuals, Senator Oluremi Tinubu and Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, were conferred with Fellowships of Yaba College of Technology for their significant contributions to the institution and the nation.
Senator Oluremi Tinubu expressed her gratitude for the honor and emphasized the collective responsibility to prepare the youth for the future. She announced a donation of Fifty Million Naira (₦50,000,000.00) as an endowment fund for the overall female best student of Yaba College of Technology, dedicating the award to all young girls who dare to dream.
