Gunmen Kill Ondo Monarch in Palace Invasion
Fear has gripped residents of Akure North Local Government Area following the brutal killing of a traditional ruler in what many are describing as a brazen and calculated attack.
Gunmen killed Oba Kehinde Jacob Faledon, the revered monarch of Agamo community in Ondo State, after invading his palace on Wednesday night. The attackers reportedly stormed the royal residence in large numbers, overpowered security around the area, and forcefully whisked the monarch away.
Shortly after the abduction, the monarch was found with multiple gunshot injuries at a location close to his palace. He was confirmed dead at the scene.
The shocking development has deepened concerns over insecurity in Ondo State, particularly in rural communities where traditional institutions often serve as the last line of grassroots leadership.
Police Confirm Killing, Launch Manhunt
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the killing of the monarch and announced that a full-scale investigation has commenced.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, the incident was reported at about 7:50 p.m. by a community leader, High Chief Ajewole Clement of New Town, Itaogbolu. He alerted the authorities that about six armed men had invaded the monarch’s residence and taken him away at gunpoint.
Security operatives responded swiftly. However, by the time they located the monarch, he had already sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Police authorities described the attack as heinous and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. Tactical units have since been deployed across surrounding bushes and neighboring communities as part of an ongoing manhunt.
Joint Security Operation Underway
Security agencies are not leaving anything to chance. The divisional police officer, backed by tactical teams, has mobilised officers to comb the area. They are working closely with local hunters, members of the Atuluse security outfit, and operatives of the Amotekun Corps.
This joint security operation aims to track down the gunmen responsible for the monarch’s killing and restore calm in the community.
Authorities have also strengthened surveillance and monitoring activities across Akure North to prevent any breakdown of law and order. Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives by providing useful information.
Community in Shock as Tension Rises
The killing of the Ondo monarch has left Agamo community in mourning. Residents described the late ruler as a peaceful leader who worked tirelessly for the unity and development of his people.
Community members gathered in small groups on Thursday morning, visibly shaken by the tragic event. Many expressed fears that the attack signals a troubling escalation of violence targeting traditional rulers in the state.
Traditional institutions in Nigeria hold both cultural and administrative significance. Therefore, any attack on a monarch carries symbolic weight and often triggers widespread anxiety.
For many in Akure North, the question remains: who would target a royal father in such a violent manner?
Growing Insecurity in Ondo State
The killing of the Ondo monarch comes amid ongoing security challenges in parts of the state. In recent years, communities in Ondo have grappled with cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, and attacks by unknown gunmen.
Although security agencies have recorded arrests in previous incidents, residents continue to call for stronger intelligence gathering and proactive policing.
Observers say the palace invasion represents a dangerous shift. Attacking a traditional ruler inside his residence sends a chilling message and could undermine public confidence in security efforts.
Security analysts argue that rural communities require more structured collaboration between formal security agencies and local vigilante groups. While outfits like Amotekun have helped curb crime in some areas, critics insist that better coordination and improved equipment remain crucial.
Authorities Promise Justice
Police authorities have reiterated their commitment to apprehend those behind the killing. They assured the public that no stone will be left unturned in the investigation.
Meanwhile, local leaders have called for calm, urging residents not to resort to self-help or retaliatory actions.
As the manhunt intensifies, attention now turns to how swiftly security agencies can deliver results. The killing of the Ondo monarch has once again spotlighted the urgent need for improved security architecture across vulnerable communities.
For the people of Agamo, however, the immediate concern is mourning their royal father while hoping justice will be served.
The coming days will likely determine whether this tragic incident becomes another unresolved case or a turning point in the fight against violent crime in Ondo State.
