Tinubu Charges Nigerian Military to Intensify Fight Against Security Threats

Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the Nigerian Armed Forces to escalate their operations against the nation’s persistent security challenges, stressing that the future of Nigeria’s democracy, economic development, and regional peace depends on a well-secured nation.

Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu made this appeal at the induction ceremony of two newly acquired Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters on Friday, as part of events marking the 61st anniversary of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

National Stability Tied to Security, Tinubu Declares

In his address, President Tinubu emphasized the strategic role national security plays in the realization of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, linking safety to democratic stability, economic productivity, and regional peace.

“A democratically stable Nigeria is fundamental to our national progress and regional peace. The defense of democracy requires a military that is well-prepared, well-trained, and well-equipped,” Tinubu stated.

He further noted that prosperity and national development are only attainable when Nigerians can pursue productive ventures in a safe environment.

“Your efforts in wrapping up our onslaught against the enemies of our collective progress are not only critical to our strategic objectives but also vital in restoring the trust and confidence of the people to thrive and prosper,” the president added.

Modernization of the Armed Forces is Non-Negotiable

President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to overhauling and modernizing Nigeria’s military, saying his administration will continue investing in advanced defense technologies.

“My administration will remain steadfast in modernizing the armed forces, ensuring that you have the best tools to perform your duties effectively,” he said.

The president disclosed that efforts are ongoing to equip the Nigerian Armed Forces with modern warfare capabilities—both conventional and asymmetric—in order to respond to emerging and evolving security threats.

He described the helicopter induction as a “strategic statement of intent” and a bold step toward expanding Nigeria’s air power and reinforcing national and regional security frameworks.

Call for Regional Peacekeeping Engagement

President Tinubu also urged the military to go beyond domestic operations and prepare for participation in regional and international peacekeeping missions.

“Globally, conflicts in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa continue to shape international security dynamics. These realities demand that we remain vigilant, adaptable, and proactive in safeguarding our national interests,” he noted.

He called for strategic readiness of the Armed Forces to promote stability and security across Africa, thereby positioning Nigeria as a responsible regional leader.

Air Force Chief Highlights Strategic Advancements

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, described the induction of the Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters as a significant achievement in the Nigerian Air Force’s modernization drive.

“They are designed to operate in challenging environments, providing critical support to both military and civil operations, including disaster relief and humanitarian missions,” Abubakar explained.

He revealed that the new platforms are part of a broader modernization effort, with nine aircraft already delivered since 2024 and 49 more expected over the next two years. These include:

  • Additional Agusta helicopters

  • AH-1 Zulu attack helicopters

  • M-346 light attack aircraft

  • C-295 airlift platforms

Abubakar stated that these assets will improve the Air Force’s precision strike and rapid deployment capabilities, which are essential in confronting Nigeria’s dynamic security landscape.

Advances in Local R&D and Personnel Training

Air Marshal Abubakar also disclosed the training of eight pilots and 18 engineers, with others undergoing specialized instruction abroad to ensure effective operation and maintenance of the new aircraft.

In addition, he highlighted progress in local research and development, including rocket retrofitting and innovative aircraft maintenance technologies, which are helping Nigeria achieve greater self-reliance in defense solutions.

“Our focus on innovation ensures sustainability and resilience, enabling us to address emerging threats with greater autonomy,” Abubakar said.

He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, the National Assembly, and defense stakeholders for their unwavering support and reaffirmed the Air Force’s dedication to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Tinubu Urges Discipline and Maintenance Excellence

President Tinubu concluded his address by urging the Air Force to uphold professionalism and maintenance discipline to derive full value from the newly inducted platforms.

“I expect discipline in operations and a strong maintenance culture that will enable the nation to derive maximum benefits from these acquisitions,” he said.

Conclusion

With the addition of advanced helicopters and the commitment to defense modernization, the Federal Government is positioning the Nigerian Armed Forces to decisively confront internal and external threats. The president’s message is clear: a secure Nigeria is the foundation for sustained democracy, economic growth, and regional peace.
