LAGOS, May 28, 2025 — The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued an official statement addressing the delay in the conduct of the English Language Paper 2 for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.

In a press release signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC acknowledged the disruption, noting that while efforts were made to uphold the integrity and security of the exam, logistical and security challenges led to a delay in administering the paper on Tuesday.

“While we successfully achieved our objective of preventing any leakage of the paper, it inadvertently affected the timeliness and seamless conduct of the examination,” the Council stated.

WAEC attributed the disruption to a combination of logistical setbacks, security issues, and sociocultural factors. The Council has pledged to collaborate more closely with security agencies to avoid a recurrence of such incidents in future exams.

“We recognize the importance of timely conduct of examinations and the impact of this delay on candidates, their schools, and parents. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused,” the statement read.

WAEC further expressed gratitude to all stakeholders—students, schools, and parents—for their patience and understanding during the period, reaffirming its commitment to excellence and the highest standards in examination conduct.

The Council concluded by reassuring the public that it remains focused on promoting academic integrity and will continue to evolve its systems to ensure efficiency and credibility in future examinations.
